8 March - International Women's Day.
Greetings to all the ladies here.
For some reason this holiday never caught on in the US or UK. In many countries it is a BIG DEAL ! Forget the flowers for the womenfolk at your peril !
And it is NOT the same as Mother's Day. 8 March is for all - not just for mothers. |

Ok I'm a little bit bored I do admit. Plus I know Scot47 is one of the more jovial characters on this board and so can take a swipe.
International women's day is an attempt, I'd guess, to highlight the status of women in many countries of the world today. That status is a poor one. Second class citizens in many parts of the world. In a majority of the none westernized world women have by far the smaller end of the wedge when it comes to the distribution of wealth, power, health resources, education, participation in the democratic process and almost everything else that the men have considered valuable.
I don't think giving a women flowers exactly makes up for it. |

Why not simply declare it a day of touchy-feely friendliness and friendship, a day of celebrations? |

Oh alright... I'll put them away. (Have to spoil my fun!)
Go women!!!!
By the way.. I've never understood the flower concept. Why buy a gift that dies in less than a week, when a potted plant lasts longer and has a not-so depressing/messy end? |

Reportedly someone one asked George Bernard Shaw why he had no flowers in vases in his house.
Answer was something like this :"I love flowers. I love children too, so I do not chop their heads off and decorate my house with them." |

I agree with Sara (or is there a verb that exsits that says 'I would like to repeat her question?).
Anywho, my GF HATES, DISPISES flowers, chocolates and the like. She likes Westend shows, wining, dining and .......... whatever comes after. If I/she ever buy flowers, it's just to spice up the garden, and not the love life...

I like chocolate and flowers, but I don't consider them to be particularly romantic gifts. In fact, they show a complete lack of imagination and a desire on the part of the gifter to take the easy way out. If you know your woman well, you know what she likes. A guy who brings me a coffee the way that I like it is far more romantic than one who goes out and buys a dozen roses.
Happy International Women's Day to all my fellow femme fatales! |

Listen, International Women's Day is all fine and dandy, but when is International Foreigner's Day? Or International Stop-Staring-At-Me Day? Or International I-Understand-the-Subtext Day? Okay, got that out of my system. Thanks for listening.
Flowers are just a symbol. We could just as easily be sending blood sausages to each other. Or giving each other hats shaped like gigantic vegetables ("Thank you SO MUCH for the giant pumpkin hat"...). I'm glad there's a thing that I can give as a gift when someone dies or when I want to show affection that won't actively offend someone (at least in the cultures with which I'm familiar). |

Pumkin? Where'd that come from?
@Caper - Are you sure you're not Susan( my GF)? <My GF like's here coffee in the morning just like you; one sugar, tad or creme and milk, but what you failed to mention was the 'soap down' in the shower before work and bed!!!> |

True story: I'm allergic to sugar. Makes me itch like you won't believe! Moreso when I was younger than now, but anyway.. on my birthday I got the best gift ever: a nacho "cake" (it was just shaped like one, intricately pieced together with bits of cheese, tomatoes, and hot peppers) with a candle on top. I laughed until my sides hurt! It was totally unexpected, simple, but so adorable.
Goes to show you.. it's not the actual gift that's important, but the thought behind it. |

Wow...I wish somebody would give ME a nacho cake...that's excellent. And much more tasty than a gigantic pumpkin hat. |
