At least they've heard of the Beatles!
I was in T'aiwan recently and try talking to them about any Western music.....no dice! Not even the Beatles!! |

Strange thing is that they are even more popular here than in their homeland! We are going, as I said, to England this year, and my (Mexican) wife insists on going to Liverpool, even though, apart from the various Beatle museums, it isn't really a tourist destination. |

Are Caucasian Mexicans gringos? Are Caucasian Latin Americans from other countries gringos? |

Oh I dunno, la', Liverpool, the Pool of Life, as Carl Gustav Jung called it, has got a lot going for it, not that I've been there much myself, but it's certainly an odd and interesting place and definitely different from London. I mean I'd avoid all the Beatles tourist things anyway if I were you and just go down the pub or something, see some current bands. Eh they were a good band them Beatles were. |

What does "more gringo than others" even mean?
And you are wrong. Any white person might be assumed to be from America and thus a gringo, but that doesn't make a gringo (ie: an American) every white person. |

Pardon my confusion, perhaps I'm reading you wrongly, but only 'white' people from the US are to be considered gringos?
Is gringo a pejorative? |

I live in Texas and Mexicans here use "Gringo" when referring to all Caucasians; but from my experience it is not always pejorative. |

Could be something to do with my age, but I want to do them things, too! |

Talking to my high school kids recently they verified that gringo = American only.
Whether or not it is pejorative was debated, although most said it was. |

Interesting read about the word "gringo"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gringo
I'm suspicious of the various stories that go around about the origin of the word, but it appears to be older than I would have thought. Funny, but where I first learned Spanish, in Spain, the word was understood, but not really in use. There, the perjorative for pale folks of northern European origin is "guiri".
Here in Ecuador, "gringo" can be used as a perjorative, but more frequently isn't. Like many things, it's frequently made more "conversational," (or whatever) by using the diminutive. (So "gringito" actually seems to be more common than "gringo.")
Some local stores where I'm well known call me Sr Gringito. Kinda weird, but I don't think it's meant badly.
Best,
Justin |

Not mine. Anecdotes of Mexican friends, 3rd-generation mid-European immigrants who identify totally as Mexican, given that both they and their parents were born in Mexico, and their annoyance at being constantly addressed in English, especially in their younger years when they didn't even know any English and could only answer with the cara de what.
Also would be interested in the opinion of non-white gringos (oops, a contradiction in terms, as no such thing exists). How do you feel when both Mexicans and non-Mexicans constantly identify white=foreigner, foreigner=white? Do you find yourself saying to the wind, What am I, chopped liver? |

Maybe I read it wrong, but I thought he meant that all white folks get referred to as "gringos."
Funny thing happened to me a couple of summers ago- My family came to visit, and seeing a whole group of "gringos" travelling together, everyone approached my sister-in-law and spoke Spanish to her, assuming she was our tourist guide. (She's Egyptian, from North Carolina. THe rest of us are white, of northern European descent.) She doesn't speak a word of Spanish, but it was rough going convincing Ecuadorians that the green-eyed white guy (me) was the one showing her around.
Best,

I second the opinion that all caucasians are gringos. How foolish to delineate Canadians from USA citizens. Dixie, do you always use your students as a basis for verifying sweeping generalizations? |
