But then, this is TEFL, which has never been a particularly well-regulated and secure profession for probably the majority of its teachers. |
This is so true, and it's to NG's credit that she obviously cares about what to do now. Having been on the hiring end and having teachers walk out at the last minute leaving me high and dry - and stressed, I can also see the other side too. At the end of the day, it's just a feature of the job. There's no point getting too worried about either a teacher not honouring a contract, or on the other hand, not being able to hold on to a great teacher.
Hope you enjoy your next job, Nature Girl ) |

I've told one of them no. And when I asked the other to confirm my visa info, they accused me of not trusting them. (Which I don't. Sorry, I'm not going halfway around the world to enter on a tourist visa and be at their mercy while I work illegally) So I've only got one contract now
Thanks for everyone's advice. |

Assuming you've informed them in writing with more advance notice than the contract requires you to give should you wish to leave the job, probably at least a month before the starting date of the contract, then I don't think you've done anything wrong morally or legally. |

I heard about an FT who did this to several schools. He said nothing, just didn't show up to any except one. Left the others hanging.
When he finally arrived at his chosen school, he found the school had done the same to him. They had hired two teachers and the one they were keeping had arrived a week earlier. Left him hanging.
Do you suppose he came to believe that there might be giant wheels of karmic justice?
I can imagine how this could become an ever widening, vicious cycle; more teachers leaving schools hanging resulting in more schools overbooking and leaving teachers hanging, etc. ad infinitum.

I think there might be a clue here as to why. |

How are they going to catch you? What could they actually do to you? |

The difference here is that your friend actually showed up with a contract, instead of never showed up. How did things work out? Did your friend get the job? After all, there was a signed contract in hand (and presumably a visa they had sponsored). |

Are they really that organised? They certainly aren't in Italy. |

I don't know. BUt I would think that they both had to go to the same foreign affairs office to get the work permit docs. SOmething might show up if I already asked for a work visa with one school |

It's over nature girl. Sorry to say... but the career is done. You're blacklisted for life world wide.... everyone knows and you're done.
LOL just kidding. I wouldn't worry about it. I've quit working for the State of Florida 5 or 6 times, but they always hire me back (although let's be clear that I'm not going back again).
That's just 1 employer. I don't think the world ESL is quite that organized. |
