That is a tough question. I often get people mentioned that I have never heard of. Gackt, yes, but he definately is off my radar as I don't play Final fantasy or listen to much Jpop.

Sumo wrestlers I would know, don't know if they are really popular or just famous. Ayaka (the singer) comes to mind, I think I'll ask my students next week as well, be interesting to see who they nominate. A lot of band material might come up, all j-pop stuff. The smap guys are famous here, though perhaps becoming a little dated for the uni crowd.

Avril Lavigne is still popular here...I like to sing her songs at karaoke once in a while.

If you are including TV/comic characters then definately you need to have Naruto, Sasuke, Kurosaki Ichigo and Gintoki.

A lot of girls know Zach Efron since High School Musical is pretty popular at the moment.

I created a set of celebrity flash cards for classroom use. If you would like a set you can download them here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/237034639/celebrity_cards.zip

There are 3 files inside the zip
- One finished set the pic sizes and print are not exactly uniform but good enuf for my use in .doc format
- The same set in PDF format
- One draft set with some additional raw pics included in .doc format

Thanks for your help!!!

Okay, there are 15 high resolution cards in the set; here is a low resolution preview of the first 6:

Just wanted to give my thanks too. I will keep updating this set as time goes on.

And I guess to stay on topic, some other famous people I know off the top of my head:

T.M. Revolution
Hikaru Utada (How did we forget her...?)

As I mentioned earlier, I was going to make this into a survey activity and use it in my classes. It's been a great success so far. I made it into a 2-part activity.

First, I put them in groups to make a list of the most famous people in Japan by category: sports, acting, music, etc... When finished, they compared and discussed their lists.

Second, in those same groups I got them to make a list of the most famous people from around the world using the same categories. Again followed by a compare and discussion activity.

Not only were they engaged throughout, but it also updated me with the latest pop culture icons. (What? Seiko Matsuda is old news?!? Shocked - j/k Laughing )
