Soon to embark on my first 'tour' in China, my company -- though generous in many respects -- will not be furnishing me with health insurance. Given that I'm going to want health insurance, has anyone had experience with procuring HI independently of your employer? Anyone have any clue, ballpark, what I'm looking at spending per month?
Looking for any and all applicable information. Thanks much!

Don't worry, the "sticky" isn't anything bad for you
It just means the other posters thought it would be a good idea to have a permanent thread about insurance.

Right. It is nothing bad. It is just that the general insurance question gets asked a lot on here. My two cents that I will contribute:
Most schools do NOT provide good insurance here. By "good insurance" I mean insurance that would actually cover illness, hospitalization, surgery, etc. I do NOT mean just accident insurance. Your school will provide accident insurance. This is the law (I think.)
Do not get me wrong, accident insurance could be very useful if you get into an accident.
But it is not so useful should a myriad of other health emergencies arise.
Also, no matter what insurance you have, you will almost definitely be required to pay cash up front when you enter the hospital. Most hospitals run it like a "debit account." You are required to deposit a certain sum, and that is drawn upon daily according to the procedures and medicine you have purchased.
Perhaps someone who has done more of the legwork could post links to some of the big international insurance companies. |

the insurance hasn't been well adressed in the labor law, has it? it's a real issue for many fts, but look at those poor construction workers .. don't wanna sway the topic..sorry
i would like to see employers at least offering some choices of companies if they don't provide an insurance or provide just a basic one. what ticks me off is when they shy away from the issue and stick a copy of the chinese insurance version in your face..here you are..you're insured!
many of us don't read chinese and may not even understand what's in our insurance until something happens and we'll end up paying most of it. i know accidents don't happen so often, but if they happen it's too late to cry.
my advice is to have your employer provide an original of your insurance to you and you have it translated for yourself. then, you might understand what it's about really.
cheers and beers to appropriate insurance for fts or at least to choices of insurance provided |

The excuse my current school used for not providing insurance (just a couple of thousand yuan for the whole year) was that "all" FTs have insurance from home that covers them while in China. I pointed out that that is definitely not always the case - especially with FTs from European countries. Made no difference to the school. They simply said they'd reimburse me up to 2000rmb.
Ended up getting one from AIA, cost 2216rmb. This is the 2nd policy I've had with them but I haven't had to use it so I don't know how well the company responds. Oh, and there was no discount for having made no claim the previous year!
Next time I'm thinking of getting a more comprehensive policy from a foreign company. Will definitely cost a lot more though... |
