Does anyone have any personal experience with American TESOL, especially the Special Thailand Program?

Have yet to hear anything about this group in any forum.
Curious to see something written up from someone who has completed one of their special projects (India, Thailand, China or Korea).

I signed up and will be doing the October program in Phuket. It looks legit to me now after some research.

Ask me again after October ([email protected])

All the best,

Chris

OK thanks and I'll keep an eye out for this thread.
May have to bite the bullet and sign up for the either the Chiang Mai or Phuket course (leaning towards CM). I like the idea of the 4-5 work assignment right after the course. I understand that it will probably be in a remote area (similar to the Mediakids group offer) but it could be a good lead in to a position of my choice later on.

Hey, what is your "position of choice"? What field do you hope to go into?

Sure, why not do it?! It sounds like a great experience. It appears to be a good deal to me. Please do let me know if you hear otherwise from anyone else. I am doing the Pukhet one in September, which I think is sold out. Chiang Mai would be awesome also, I hope to make it up there when I am in Thailand

Cheers,

Chris

Phuket already sold out! Surprised to hear something like that with a few months to go. I always thought they would make room even at the last minute but perhaps not.
As for position of choice that's something that I need to determine in time and I'm hoping that by the time I finish the 4 month work term I'll be clearer on that issue. Still gathering as much information from as many sources as possible. Right now I think it's time to get a Thai language book.
Ciao

Motown is right. Actually most TEFL schools that offer gauranteed placements after the course use placement companies or recuiters like MediaKids. I don't know much about the actual course, but dont expect to get a placement where you want and most likely it will be in a more rural government school. Some people like this, some dont. It's all relative.

Be a little wary of advertising from these types of courses. Remember that they are more business than education and will do and say everything they can to get you to Thailand at their course. Lots of competition amongst TEFL schools in Thailand.

IMO, if you are going to take a course, take the CELTA. I don't know how valuable an American Tesol certificate would be in many countries and at the better schools. It certainly woudln't be worth much of anything in most Western countries. If you are looking for a course/vacation, then these Phuket, island type TEFL courses are a decent place to start. If you are thinking of having a more serious and professional learning experience and having a valuable certificate, take the CELTA.
