I can see that many posts have been devoted to NHI but I haven't seen any relating specifically to Westgate. I'd like a rough idea of how much it costs out of your salary c.270,000. It mentions that the over 40s pay more - is this a lot more?
I found an English page on the NHI system and it seemed to say that under 40s paid 80/1000 of their salary and over 40s 94/1000. This would mean my paying around 26,000 a month which seems quite a lot. It also said that you only had to join if staying for a year which is strange as Westgate contracts are for 3 months. I'm also unsure if Westgate pays half of this amount or not?
I know you can sometimes claim back payments but not if you work for less than 6 months. And it looks like you have to take NHI through Westgate.
So can anyone from Westgate tell me if they're paying nearly a tenth of their salary in NHI (if over 40)? Or is this reduced as a 1st year resident with no income the following year? Feel free to pm me.
Thanks in advance - any info much appreciated. |

NHI is NHI... whether you're with any company and you use NHI, it's still NHI.
From the FAQ
Quote: |
Shakai Hoken
For company workers. Required to be enrolled by employer. Premiums are based on ones salary. You pay monthly premiums out of your salary and the employer pays 50% of the premium. When you go to the doctor you pay 30% of the hospital bill. |
Social Insurance would be where Westgate would pay half (though I have no idea what Westgate offers).
Quote: |
Kokumin Kenko Hoken (National Health Insurance)
Self- employed, part time and housewives etc join the Kokumin Hoken.Premiums are based on ones salary and are cheap in the first year. You pay monthly premiums out of your income. When you go to the doctor you pay 30% of the hospital bill and you pay monthly premiums at the local ward office |
NHI's basic info. Now it all depends on your background basically. |

Thanks for that. So 26,000 a month out of 270,000 sounds about right then for an over 40? |

I don't know whether Westgate offers shakai hoken or not. Dispatch agencies are funny, so if you are hired by Westgate, ask.
First year, you only pay 2500 yen or so (yes, no decimal point error there), and in the next year it goes up tenfold. Whether this applies to shakai hoken or not, I can't recall. Again, ask. I started out on kokumin kenko hoken, not shakai hoken.
If this is not the case for shakai hoken and Westgate, then a figure of 26,000 per month is about right, perhaps even low. It depends on more than your salary. Where you live also plays a role. |

Thank you both for those helpful replies.
Westgate's literature only specifies NHI and an extra charge for those over 40 so if I go I will have to ask which they charge.
Unless anyone who works at Westgate is reading this and can give us a rough idea of how much is stopped?
thanks again everybody

I'm under 40 but am working for Westgate and only pay 2300 a month, I'm sure it won't be loads more than that if you're over 40! |

Remember that that 2300 will only be for your first year in Japan- expect to be paying a lot more than that if you stay longer. |

Read this link for info on over 40. (Red highlight at the end is the key.)

Contributions
Your insurance contribution is shared by you and your employer equally. Your employer is responsible for paying your share of contribution and employers share of contribution to the Social Insurance Office.
Contribution for regular months (without bonus payment)
Contribution amount = Your Standard Monthly Remuneration* Contribution rate ***
Contribution for bonus months (regular salary + bonus)
Contribution amount = Your Standard Monthly Remuneration* Contribution rate ***
+ Your Standard Bonus Amount** Contribution rate***
* Standard Monthly Remuneration
The Standard Monthly Remuneration serves as the basis for calculating the benefits and insurance contributions for Employees Health Insurance and the Employees' Pension Insurance. Your actual remuneration paid from the employer is classified into the prescribed remuneration table, and your Standard Monthly Remuneration is determined.
Your remuneration includes every payment such as salary, wage and any allowance which you receive from your employer in return of your service performed. However, the bonus and such received at intervals of more than 3 months are excluded.
** Standard Bonus Amount
The Standard Bonus Amount is the amount of bonus you receive from your employer at intervals of more than 3 months, rounded down to the nearest \1,000. The maximum of the Standard Bonus Amount for the purpose of contribution calculation is a total of \5.4 million in bonus payments per one fiscal year (from 1 April to 31 March).
*** Contribution rate (as of September 2007)
The contribution rate for the Government-managed Health Insurance (SEIFUKANSHO KENKO HOKEN) is 82/1000. If you are aged 40 or over but under 65, the contribution rate is 94.3/1000 including the contribution for Long-term Care Insurance.
