I was told by a recruiter that it may not be possible to come
teach in China in September as the govermnet may be
closing its borders to Americans due to bird flu>
Should I not apply in China? Because I really need a job
in September. I was thinking Korea..
any thoughts??
Thanks |

Why not apply to both and even somewhere else as well, just in case? |

This would make international headlines around the world if it were true. It could be a ruse just to get you over there faster. |

Has your recruiter got an inside info straight out of the party meeting? Or, are you pulling legs here?
Cheers and beers to inside info, assumptions or predictions |

For what it's worth, I was told today by a Uni in Shandong "the Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs of Shandong will not process the work permit now because of the H1N1". |

I felt a bit of sarcasm when I was first posting on this thread (above). Today, I read a the news from WHO that's considering the full scale of pandamic globally. Our OP is not far from the truth as it looks. And, I am also about to be or not to be issued the RP.
You guys that've been refused the visas what are your plans now? Have you just come to China or been in China for a while? Did the PSB tell you to leave the country or what? I mean if they "CLOSE" the borders they should keep us in, shouldn't they? I've got a family here.
Cheers and beers to a rational thinking of all authorities everywhere |

Yes, I was told I could not register in Yinchuan even though they can read on my passport that I have not set foot in the US in two years.
Go figure!!! |

I'm in Shanghai and just renewing my visa with a new job. No one mentioned this. Is this an issue in Shanghai? Should I be worried? My current visa expires on my last day of work and I hadn't planned on buying a flight out of the country... |

I'm in roughly the same situation (renewing contract). My FAO hasn't mentioned any potential problem, but he's inexperienced/inept/lazy/an azzhole (take your pick). I'm not worrying yet though, if problems did arise I think my school has good guanxi with the local PSB |

I'm thinking of spending a weekend in Canada before heading over to China. Is there any concern of them using that as an excuse to deny me a visa over H1N1 concerns? |

Andrew, I find that Chinese staff, especially government staff, will avoid using their commonsense or initiative whenever they can. They tick boxes. If they've been told that people who have recently been to Canada are a risk, then YOU will be considered a risk if you've recently been to Canada. And don't bother trying to reason with them that you went nowhere near the areas of risk, all they'll care about are the Canadian border control stamps in your passport.
Bear in mind that these people don't know you or care about you. All you are to them is a problem. They will employ the easiest way of getting rid of that problem. If you provide them a weekend in Canada, then so be it.
I'm assuming that you're in the US - a weekend in Canada from elsewhere seems a little extravagant! - so you apparently already have H1N1 China-entry problems, why add to the list? |

Yes folks I was in BJ during the Dragon boat holiday a few weeks back and was asked 3 times by the hotel staff I was staying at to show them my entry to China stamp which they had difficulty finding. Does this mean being from Australia that if Id arrived recently and had gone through Chinese immigration ok I may have difficulties finding a place to stay? |

Ah, I see what you're getting at, you mean:
As a tourist on a tourist visa
As a teacher on a Z visa
If the school doesn't give you an apartment
If you have no money
If the entry stamp is blurred
If you get lost
If you don't speak Chinese
If you don't use your common sense
If... |
