I will probably be taking a post in Sohar this fall and I would like anyone's opinions/stories about Sohar and Sohar University. Thanks!

Sohar is a place that grows on you. My initial reaction when i first arrived was to jump on the first plane out of here but as time went by and i became more familiar with the place i grew to like it. I have now just signed on for another year Smile

Im currently working in the University and what it lacks in organisation it makes up for in helpful staff and great facilities. Be prepared to have 20+ contact hours but you'll obviously get paid for the overtime

Sohar itself can be quite boring, however, it is rapidly developing. Since i have been here (8 months), a new 5 star hotel, safeer mall, and a new cinema have been opened. The airport is under development and theres talk about a railway from sohar port to Muscat.

Theres a lively expat community here and if you like the outdoors im sure you'll enjoy your time here

If your looking for nightlife Muscat is less than 2hours away while dubai is slightly over 2 hours. Having a car will make life a lot easier so i hope you can drive Very Happy

If you have any questions at all id be glad to help

Potentially interesting, if it hadn't been outdated by three months.

Pros: several hotels for those who need a watering hole, good Lulus supermarket, lots of Western expats mainly due to many jobs at the new port, lower cost of housing than Muscat (200 rial for a nice apt. or even a small house) and miles of beaches.

Cons: the beaches are not that nice--especially with all the red tides this year, very little entertainment outside the hotels and new cinema, you will definitely need a car (150--170 rials per mth. to rent a Toyota Yaris or similar) in order to have a bit of freedom because the distances between areas are vast in this small city, many bad restaurants so I cook almost exclusively at home (just my opinion, though).

Staying a couple of years and being fairly content is possible but don't expect too much stimulation. You need to be someone who can easily entertain yourself and don't mind being alone a great deal.
