Could anyone suggest academic journals devoted to the discipline? I'm a total neophyte, and would be interested in familiarizing myself with some of the key theories, arguments, pedagogical matters, etc.
Thanks in advance. |

Probably I would have to recommend starting with a few text books, which have been through more peer review, rather than journals, where the tried and true ideas mix with the marginal, the minority, and the truly weird.
But if it's journals you want, ELTJournal and TESOL quarterly are probably the biggest. Forum isn't too bad either.
Best,

Thanks, Justin. As a big fan of the marginal, minority, and truly weird, I'll give those a look. They also have the advantage of being available electronically through my library's e-resources page. One question, however: What is the full title of the last item? I wasn't able to find anything for either "ELT Forum" or "TESOL Forum"; of course, it could simply mean that the library does not subscribe.
I'd be glad to look at some texts if you have recommendations.
Thanks again. |

NOt sure where you're at, Dirimini-
I think it IS ELT Forum, but it's one I don't read a lot myself. It's a state department funded publication (US), I believe, so very possible that your uni library just doesn't get it.
Best,

Contact TESOL. I have a printed version of something called "Getting published: demystifying the process", which was presented at the 2001 TESOL conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
16 pages of journal names and descriptions (4 or so per page) |

A really good book that addresses most of the issues in ESL is "Second Language Acquisition" by Selinker and Gass. You can then use their references to find the articles that they cite. |
