Hey,

I am moving to Taiwan soon and I wanted your opinions.

I want to live cheaply near beaches and Taiwans natural beauty. But, I also want to have a social life-pilates classes and a cinema. I know a guy who lives in Taitung and he really loves it.

What do you guys think about living in Taitung? I would also love a nice apartment/house with a pool.

If not Taitung then can you recommend any other cities? I dont want to live in the north.

Thanks a lot Very Happy

Hi Justine

I can perhaps tell you a little about that area if you're interested.

For natural beauty, Taitung really is lovely. As I remember, the most stunning scenery on the east coast of Taiwan is a little more north, towards Hualian and Ilan. What strikes me about Taitung is the small Island just off the coast called Green Island. It's a very small Island, but with some beautiful wild ocean scenery, and best of all the natural hot springs which are situated right beside the ocean. Picture a dark warm starry night beside the ocean, traditional Chinese lanterns illuminating paths beside the rocks, piping hot pools from the natural volcanic waters and the pacific ocean waves crashing over the rocks into the pools. It really is that wild and gorgeous.

I briefly passed through the town/city of Taitung one evening to visit a night market, and I remember it as a very nice place, feels more like a remote town than a city though.

The major drawback I would feel to living here is the isolation. It's quite a hike from Taitung to a bigger city like Taipei, Kaohsuing or Taichung. I'm not so sure about your chances for piliates classes in that area. Snorkeling, rafting and mountain hiking you'll have no problem finding though Wink

Perhaps the most important thing about Taidong or Taitung is there are VERY few full-time jobs there. Ditto for Hualien. Most full-time jobs are concentrated on Taiwans filthy, air-polluted west coast, although Illan on the North east coast has quite a few. Good luck and good health!
