mintxleaf, I can understand the frustration over booking a flight. However, if you look around, there are deals going on, even until August. So don't fret, there are cheap flights if you are willing to look. And of course, if any of the others know some really cheap flights, please by all means share.
And once again, seklarwia is the man (or woman...I don't know which one...). Thanks for sharing the info. |

| Well, firstly you shouldn't be doing it just for the money. There are plenty of ways to make more money than teaching. |
In Japan? Like what?
Most newbies to TEFL are not qualified for much, and most non-teaching jobs require a fairly high fluency in reading/writing/speaking Japanese. |

Woman... last time I checked anyways
The whole flights thing will get quite annoying. You'll see offers come and go before you'll get confirmation on your arrival date.
What do you call cheap?
I randomly did a few searches on flights from the UK on the 18th August and one way you'll likely be looking at about 350, which isn't so bad really considering it is peak travel time.
If you are under 27 and apply for a youth travel card, 350ish will get you a direct flight into Tokyo with STA. Shame because if you wanted to go home for Christmas and knew what the dates of the winter break were, you could get a London to Tokyo return for about 550 (but I couldn't be bothered to search how much it would cost to return at the end of the break)
Opodo did have some similar deals on one ways but they had only a few seats remaining, so chances are those will be gone by time you get a date.
There were a couple going for just over 300 but they you arrive 2 days after departure going via places like Columbo (don't know where that is).
I don't know anything about US flights though... sorry.
If you had a close relative working for airlines or places like Eurostar then you'd be laughing with the deals you could get. |

Well it was Sri Lanka Air (can't remember the name of the airline precisely) so yes. Your geography is better than mine. I'd never heard of the place.
Would you need a transit visa to go through Sri Lanka? Wait... not one you need to apply for before hand. |

I'll make sure to remember that.

And I guess by cheap, I mean anything around $500 from the US. Of course, I'll be looking around and will share if I find anything cheap. Although, I'm not too sure what is considered cheap since I've never really bought a ticket to go that far. |

about 5 years ago, I did a summer study abroad session in Japan, and at that point with a few months notice my ticket was 600 round trip with no layovers.
I've been trying various travel websites as well as trying the airlines direct, and have been hitting around 600-700 dollars for one way, and thats with stops in the flight shooting for a mid august departure date just to plan for the expenses.
Who knows if that will go up or go down as we get closer to august. (heres hoping it goes down) |

| Excellent! I got my placement: Sakai-shi, Osaka prefecture! I'm SO excited. I'm also excited because my move is from Korea to Japan, so I'm not worried about ticket prices, just plane crashes! |

I remember Sakai-shi fondly........It is where I had my one-and-only Japanese-style wedding.
If you are looking forward to being near a major city, then you have hit a home run with placement. Sakai-shi's size is nothing to sneeze at either. If I didn't have either a girlfriend or a job offer in Sendai, I'd be very jealous of you right now |

| I've always been iffy when it came to Interact. Out of curiosity, for those accepted, do they choose their own placement or is it more like a chance thing like with JET's set up. I am looking into other alternatives and it would be nice if I could find more information involving companies that hire, or place candidates, in the northern regions of Japan. Seems most are in like Kanto and stuff. |

At least with an Osaka placement, a teacher can find ample part-time work to supplement his/her income or more easily switch jobs when he/she finishes the initial contract in March. I found Sendai to be more of a challenge job hunt-wise. Fortunately, I may have found a non-Interac ALT position in southern Miyagi Prefecture. The employer actually pays into social insurance. |

SO now we know who's gonna be taking us around when visiting Osaka, right? |

| I'm kind of intimated by Sakai's size (at least from the sat. pictures). I live in Busan, which is Korea's second largest city, but am on the outskirts and it feels like a neighborhood, not a city. I tried hard to get a city job so I wouldn't have to drive, and for ample martial arts options, and so my wife who will be joining me later, could find a job easier. I hope there are plenty of green areas for me to explore. I'm sure gonna miss my 20-min walk to the beach, but there is plenty about Korea that I wont miss. |

As for plenty of green areas, you should be able to find those in neighboring Wakayama and Nara Prefectures. As for beaches, from what I recall off the top of my head (please help me remember, Osaka people), you could take the Nankai train to Nishikinohama or Rinku Town. While this will be farther away, Shirahama in Wakayama is also supposed to have a good beach. You can also get some nice views of the coast on the Nankai Main Line as you ride from Osaki station to Nankai Wakayama station. Oh, I just remembered that Hannan City also has Pichi Pichi Beach. |
