An abandoned puppy was rescued by my colleague some months back. He (the colleague) has raised and house-trained her (the dog), but is leaving Oman soon and urgently needs to find a home for her. So far the usual avenues (word of mouth, flyers on expat bulletin boards etc.) have been unsuccessful. Any ideas? Please?

Pet owners can have their four-legged friends sterilised free of charge via the Animal Rescue Centre. Less traumatic than drowning unwanted puppies/kittens.
American readers please note: the last sentence should not be taken seriously.

I'm not sure if you are American But IF you are you can bring it home easily. I have brought a cat back from Iraq and a dog back from Guatemala to the US.
You only need the rabies shot certificate, and proof that it was given from a vet. I also got agricultural deportation papers (just in case) but I never had to show them.

I am actually pending about teaching in Oman because I want to bring my dog where ever I go this year. He's neutered and a small terrier/poodle mix (the one I rescued in guatemala). I'm so attached to him now.

It looks like there is a trade teaching job possibility for me but I'm having a time trying to find out how it would work out having my little dog with me.
If anyone has any information please write me.

John, I was covering my back in case the politically-correct crowd took offence/offense.
Of course retired marines would never drown unwanted animals; a quick karate blow is more their style. Wink

Dogs aren't the most popular animals in Oman. Best to contact the Omani consulate about bringing one over here.

I just sent a message to the rescue group to see what they say. I have read some posts under search of people having dogs with then they rescued while in Oman, but I am wanting to bring my 14 pound terrier mix that I rescued in Guatemala with me.
Do you see people on the street with pet dogs? A man's dog was taken from him in Saudi by the Saudi police and disposed of according to a friend of mine presently working there.
I'm on the edge of coming to Oman and having never been there I sure want to make sure of their rules first.

You can have a dog in Oman - just be aware that the majority of the population will consider you to be mentally unbalanced to want to have a dog. They'll be even more convinced of your craziness when they learn you let it live indoors with you Shocked

I know a number of people with dogs and they walk them quite uneventfully in their neighbourhoods - just the usual kids barking at you (which I can never understand, my dog already knows how to bark). People will cross the street to avoid you (no matter what size your dog is) and you MUST pick up after the dog and ALWAYS keep it on a leash. This is more for the dog's protection than anyone else.

It saddens me deeply when I hear of teachers who go against all good advice and decide to raise a pup or kitten that comes their way, especially in these far-flung desert towns in the Gulf. There used to be an advert years ago stating wisely that a pet was not just for Christmas, it was for life. Too many in our profession simply don't do their research when taking on such pets, considering things like: proximity of veterinarians, decent animal food, proper exercise, neighbour reaction to wailing and yelping and what to do during vacations or at the end of a contract. Sure, you've got to have a heart of stone not to be seduced by some of the folorn little critters you see, but don't let your heart rule your head. The long term welfare of the pet has got to come before short term gratification.
