Sorry if I maybe put it the wrong way.
What I meant that Saudi has a lot of luxurious places - like their colleges, airports, mall - look looks so great and grendeur.
I know you can't do much in public, but there are compounds where people actually meet and have fun and they get close because they are in the same boat.
I am free in my country, but still I'm very lonely. It's not easy to meet people, you can't just come and say hi to everybody. So, my freedom doesn't really help much.

Saudi Arabia is a strange place (duh!, now that is an understatement!) where there are fabulous malls with all of the latest designers, and you go outside and the towns look like dumps. The desert is treated like a dump- the highways are lined with abandoned furniture, cars, tires, and every blue plastic bag ever produced.

It felt like the wealth of Dubai with the mindset of a trailer park. Some people get on with compound life, but I prefer to live in a town with the locals as well as with the expats.

I didn't mean to be sharp about the standard of living question, but I am familiar with both places, and Oman is so much more civilized, and even more modern in terms of values and possibilities. Muscat is a really beautiful city- much more so that what I saw in Saudi Arabia.

My university is in Salalah, and that's kind of a small place which is far from anything else I'm concerned.
May I ask you where have you been in Saudi? Which cities?
My first choice is Oman but we'll see how it goes. The university there has a bad reputation which was in the grapewine here on forum.
But I do appreciate your advice.

Saudi Arabia might have luxurious malls and cafes, but as someone else said, the cities are a dump, at least Jeddah is. And furthermore, very sterile. Harmful for the eyes and the mind. All you will see is concrete, asphalt, glass, sand, and lots of rubbish and plastic bags strewn all over the place.

If you live in a compound, it is nice, otherwise you have to face the elements I mentioned above, and it gets very tiring, boring, frustrating, and deleterious to one's health.

Anyway, if you want luxury, glitz, and glamour, go to Dubai, London, or NY. From everyone who has been to both places, Oman is a lot kinder and gentler on the eyes and mind than Saudi.
