What about downloading from bittorrent sites? I'm talking of course about peer-to-peer file sharing. Even here at home we rarely watch TV because we download all our fave shows to watch commercial-free at our leisure.

If you use bitcomet it gets through their blocks. and you can easily download from mininova and sumotorrent.

some of the others are blocked... but I've even gotten through to piratebay the last time I tried.

We have the 2nd highest speed, and get decent speed. A full length movie takes a night to download, a Cd takes about an hour.

Which package, if any, do you prefer from Etisalat? Is the TV worth having? Is it worth paying for the higher speed internet?

You can find their stuff online. We use the 2nd fastest speed, and it works well. As for TV, you can get a satelight reciever or sign up for showtime. They are very good, and you will get movies on showtime when they come out on DVD in the store.

What do folks do about music? I read somewhere that itunes is not available in the UAE. Is it advisable to bring music with me, and if so, in what format?

You can bring music, or download any music. It isn't that restrictive about music.

Is there any equivalent of netflix, or downloadable movies?

You can download movies using bitcomet, or you can go to any of the HUNDREDS of dvd rental shops.

Thanks guys - all very interesting and helpful. Good news about National Geographic.

Does anyone know which proxy servers will work in the UAE. I have been googling around and find a lot of discussion about ones that do not work.

MrScaramanga - can you say any more about Limewire? I don't know what it is used for.

Hi jwesl.
1. I won't tell you which proxy servers are used on an open forum. Etisilat is always on the lookout for proxy's and will close them. PM me and I'll tell you one or two that work.

Limewire is a P2P (peer 2 peer) site which allows you to search for movies, music, and data on other people computers. I don't like it because too often I have downloaded trojan viruses.

download bitcomet and then use mininova, sumotorrent or avuze they work here in the UAE.

I used AnchorShield HotSpot. It works...slows things down. Keep in mind that it's free because they will randomly pop up these advertisements which you can 'skip'. It just means waiting for Etisalats cruddy service coupled w/ the slow down from the proxy.

Limewire is one of the peer-to-peer file sharing programs available online. You can download the basic package which is free, or choose to pay $13.95 for a one time purchase that gives you more search options and faster download speed than the basic package. There is also another download for $34.95 for one year that gives you more search options + tech support if you need it.

I have the basic package. It works okay. It will warn you when something is fishy with copyrights (most of the files are...) Up to you to make the decision to download or not... As with any other P2P program you will occasionally get viruses. Make sure you virus protection program is up-to-date!

MrS.

I would recommend using bitcomet, and then searching for the torrentz with Mininova, sumo torrent or avuze.

But I like them better than limewire.

MrF.

A proxy server allows you to bypass the blocks etisilat has placed on websites.

so you go to their site first, then type in the webaddress of the site you want to go to ON THEIR page, and it then goes there for you.

the way it works is that it acts as a proxy and not as your UAE ISP address, so it bypasses the blocking filters that etisilat uses.

As far as etisilat knows, you are just on the proxy webpage and not going anywhere else.

I am moving to Al Ain and have read in this forum that it can take some time to arrange for Internet access from Etisalat. What does an Internet junkie do in the mean time to get an online fix?

MrS: Does an insecure wifi connection secretly wish that it was a wired connection? Laughing
