I know most international airports you can get your money exchanged. Is it a good idea to have some yen already exchanged before you head to the country? I was thinking about just exchanging some when I am in the airport. |

Airoport exachnage rates are not good. Get travelers checks because they haev a good exchange rate and then you can change those sometimes for free! |

If your moving to Japan wont you need to close your old account anyway? Its always a good idea to have some of the local currency but I wouldn't advise changing money at the airport as the rates can be really bad |

I just stopped by an ATM in the airport once I picked up my baggage. The only time I ever went to an exchange window was in Prague years ago and didn't know any better.
You might have to try more than one ATM, though. Not all of them were in my network, but YRMV. And at least in Tokyo, I had to stop by a Citibank or post office to use the ATM, as many of the smaller ones in corner stores didn't work for me. |

Most convience store ATMs or local ATMs won't work internationally. Only 7-11 will (as well as most post offices, etc). |

??!!
If you are flying to Narita, I know there is at least one 7-11 ATM. It is very close to where you catch the trains into Tokyo, and there is an information booth right there that can point the way. |

Why would you need to do that, unless you were leaving that country permanently and planned to never have any savings/transactions in that country again?
I have been in Japan 11 years and still have my old bank accounts in NZ, and they are regularly used, because I need to send money back to pay for various things. |

I exchanged my money at LAX prior to leaving for Japan in case I didn't have time to get it exchanged.
It turned out I was too busy in Tokyo to get it exchanged and was nice to have the money when I moved to where I am now. |

Shop around in you home country for the best deal. Change what you can before hand (I remember people having issues with limits on how much some places would allow you to exchange), then find out how much your bank charges you for overseas withdrawls and what your daily limit is. If your bank doesn't charge through the nose (you might want to open a new account if you know of a bank that has lower charges) just use ATMs to withdraw cash when you get here.
Avoid exchanging at airports!
If you are arriving in the evening or later make sure you use the ATM at the airport before leaving. The ATMs at the airport and 7-11s are avaliable 24hrs, but most others go out of service between 7pm-9am and not all cards may work in 7-11 ATMs (a visiting friend had a card that simply wouldn't work in my local 7-11 but worked fine in the post office). |
