What I know for sure - Geos Kids have had quite a few of their new teachers start work on a tourist visa, not even waiting for the CoE to come through. I know this because that is the main reason why I knocked back a job with them, plus 3 other people who were hired same time as me did start work on a tourist visa and they told me it was common practise (this is in Kyushu and Tokyo, apparently Geos in Kansai region is doing things the proper way).

Story I have heard - One of my friends has told me that Geos is now under investigation from immigration. The company has had to keep a bunch of newly arrived teachers at head office and can't send them out to their new schools because they don't have the proper visa yet. They have also had to delay a new lot of teachers from leaving their home country until their proper working visa comes through. Also, apparently a couple of new arrivals were turned away at the airport by immigration and were sent back on the first flight home.

I'm curious to know if anybody has heard anything about this.
