|

Hello everyone! Before I came to China I worked as a Deputy Sheriff in the USA. I just found out one of my former fellow Officers is in need of a kidney transplant. I am considering trying to be a donor. I was wondering what impact this could have on any future pre-employment medical exams? Does anyone by chance have any knowledge or experience with this matter? |

Zorak, I just passed the medical exam and I had it done when I was in pretty bad shape due to emotional issues (as in underweight and a terribly 'jumpy' heart). If your overall health is good, your body functions normally and any serious diseases can be ruled out, you should be fine. |

That's a wonderful thing you're considering doing for your felllow officer, but yeah, don't mention it during the exam. Seeing as you're in Guangzhou, they might offer money for your available kidney. "Donation" is indeed a foreign concept over there. |

Don't mention it ? I think it will be hard to avoid when they do an ultrasound and see that a kidney is missing. |

Horriel, the OP says they are "considering" trying to a donor at this point. Guess I was focusing on the now. Who knows how he'll (or she'll) feel about working/living in China after making a kidney donation. |

"Considering trying to be a donor." It could be an issue with the Chinese authorities. One kidney is a long way from being an "emotional wreck" or having a "jumpy heart." My guess is that an irregular ECG would be an issue, possibly a deal breaker, but it's only a guess. Psychiatric issues here are barely recognized, more of a loss of face than a medical problem.
Sounds like you still need to discover if you are even a possible donor. Why not try that first? |

I just did my medical exam and I think that if I was missing a kidney, they wouldn't have even noticed. They did a chest x-ray, but I don't think that it revealed all of my organs (not positive, but I saw the x-ray and didn't see all my organs).

Just my opinion only, CJD, but I think as long as you don't have HIV or some other disease that frightens them, I think you're in the clear. The school certainly does not want them to reject someone who is already in country. Good luck!
Not referring to you, CJD, but I lived in a few cities and towns in China and none of them seemed to accomodate persons with disabilities in any way. Nothing close to the ADA at work in mainland China. |
