Hi Folks! We've all hears the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" well, there is soon a Total Eclipse in Japan!  A fiend of mine told me he was going to Amami Oshima to watch it and says that it is a bit cheaper if you make your own plans and not going with a tour group because the tour groups take so much money when they plan it for you!!!! 
Questions:
Is anyone here going? 
CAn you tell me the best way to go?
Is it going to be mainly scientists or mainly hippies going there?

Good luck for the weather!
I saw one a few years ago back home in Cornwall, England. The whole area went mad for it, arranging parties, renting out private houses to tourists, etc. Then on the actual day it clouded over. The sun popped out for a couple of seconds around the time of total moon cover but it was still pretty lame. I remember getting ridiculously drunk afterwards, though. That was kind of fun. |

| Good luck finding accommodation in the area at the time. I saw posts on Japan travel sites from eclipse enthusiasts who had already planned and booked everything two years ago- I think you will find that any accommodation, and possibly also transport, was long since booked out, by both Japanese and overseas visitors. |

You'll probably have better luck here than with the endless drizzle we get in England. I won't bother going to see this one, but its good to see it once in your life I suppose. I remember it was cool because you could see the darkness moving across the land and all the birds started chattering as though getting ready to roost. Couldn't see much of the sun and it was over in a few seconds. Pretty interesting though, would have obviously been much better on a really clear day. |

Hay, thanks Muppet! I think your right, its like a once in a lifetime chance!!! But if I cant go this time maybe I'll go next time.  Thanks for your stories, was there many wierdoes there because I am a little worried that eclipses are popular with wierdoes.  I prefer the science to the New Age but of course I am happy for hippies to have fun. But what about the parties are they a bit noisy and what kind fo music is it? |
