I have read hints and direct comments about having passports kept while in the country but I wanted to approach the subject directly now.

I am still learning a lot about KSA - please excuse my ignorance. Given the location of Jeddah - on the Red Sea and the western border of KSA - it is possible to take "weekend" outings and go to a neighboring country? I know that weekend will mean Monday and Tuesday. Is such traveling possible? desireable? cheap? If yes to any of these questions - especially the last one - is it possible to get a multiple entry/exit visa to the KSA (it will be working visa)? Please feel free to educate me...but do it gently. This is my first time Wink

Weekends in Saudi Arabia are on Thursday and Friday, if that's what you meant. If your employer doesn't keep your passport, and if you can get (and wish to pay for) a multiple entry visa, there should be no reason why you couldn't take a weekend trip to, say, Jordan or Egypt.

But, from Jeddah, that would be quite a hike unless yer talking about flying!

Not all employers give multiples. If you are in Jeddah you may be out of luck. Asmara and Addis are not far - if you have an exit visa.

Jeddah is not particularly near any borders - while you can certainly travel from there, weekend trips abroad are not as feasible as they would be fromt he Eastern Province.

It's certainly possible, but as Scot says, not all employers give multiple visas. The only way to know what your employer's policy is would be either to ask them directly, or ask somebody who is working there.

Are there weekend trips I can take if I fly - say to Egypt? Sudan? Is leaving the country like this a big hassle?

Leaving and entering KSA on short trips is entirely hassle free - provided you have the crucial exit-reentry visa.

There are plenty of flights from Jeddah and Riyadh to other major cities in the region. These flights have tended to be quite expensive considering the relatively short distances involved. However, things have improved in recent years, esp. with the advent of low-cost airlines like Air Arabia, and weekend trips might be a possibility even for those without money to burn.
