How much should "social insurance" cost? I'm told that it's a combination of health insurance and national pension, part of which I would be able to get back after six months.

I'm being told it will cost something like Y25,000/month on a job that pays Y230,000. That sounds pretty high to me, but I'm not sure of the costs in Japan. Does that sound right?

If your employer supports shakai hoken, expect to pay half of the payments per month, and it will include health insurance and pension.

If your employer DOESN'T support it, you will have to get separate health insurance (kokumin kenko hoken) and pension (nenkin). First year of this health insurance is 2,500 yen/month or so, but goes up tenfold thereafter.

Don't take a "full-time" teaching job for only 230,000yen/month. The basic standard is 250,000yen/month.

Well, it's an ALT job, and it's in Saga prefecture, so I don't know if it's that bad of a deal.

Actually, I've seen many ALT ads with wages much lower than 230,000. Even us Interac lap dogs are only getting 230,000 in basic wages (We get an attendence bonus each month which takes us up to 250,000/month)

With the market the way it is, we have no room for negotiation: We take what is on offer or some other desperate soul will take it instead.

Of course you shouldn't accept a position if the salary is not even going to provide you with decent living conditions.

I guess that depends on how much danger you put yourself in day to day. For example, each day for me may end my life, and when it doesn't (as is usually the case), the hospital bills are insane. If you enjoy jumping off of 30 meter cliffs as a hobby (like I do), then my suggestion would be to invest in the best healthcare available. Pain is temporary. I'm just amazed that I'm still alive.

Ok, so they're up to 235,000 now. Is it really going to be that difficult to live on that much in a rural area?

No. Like I said earlier, expect to fork out about 125,000 yen/month for basic necessities. I've shown the breakdown on this a zillion times, but if you want more details, PM me.
