Hiya,

I'm looking at teaching in China pretty soon - i had been looking at korea but job offers there have been either bad or non-existent. And I recently spent 2 months travelling in China and think it could be cool to work there. I'm in japan now and go back there quickly. My question is - I've noticed a few people saying on the forum that all the jobs for 2009 will be filled by september.....I've been sending applications recently, but is time really running out? If I don't organise a job over the next couple of weeks or so, am I a bit screwed for the next while?

Dunno if its relevant, but I've no teaching experience, have a master's degree, am from Ireland

I would say the quality jobs may have dried up by now. There may perhaps be a flurry of online advertisements for English teachers in the next couple of weeks though, we will see.

The private chain schools are always hiring, so if you are desperate you could sign on with one of those, then after you arrive & get adjusted you can look around for other positions. Just off the top of my head there is wall street English, English first, web English, Aston English. These places are really hit & miss in terms of a quality work environment, depending upon the city.

The lack of teaching experience does not really matter for most schools, but being Irish/Western & having a Masters are both a plus. I would say that anyone of the above mentioned schools would jump at hiring you if you contacted them.

No you will not be completely screwed because every year there are thousands of positions for English teachers in China that go unfilled. But you may be screwed in terms of finding a "great job".
