Can anyone tell me what the average salary is for a teacher after deductions? Supposing the general figure of 250,000yen/mnth is used. How much is left over after tax, and other deductions? Cheers. |

Lop off 7-10% for taxes.
Any other deductions depend on your contract. Housing, e.g.
Insurance will run 2,500 yen or so the first year, then ten times that afterward (if you are on the national health insurance plan). |

And the 250,000 can no longer be assumed. A lot of full-time jobs are for less than that, these days. |

Cheers for the replies. How does that 7-10% breakdown? Is it all income tax? Or is it partly local residents tax? |

My finding is that a lot of the tax in Japan is hidden. People aren't too crazy about the high levels of income tax or goods tax (like in Ontario, Canada) that gets paid. There isn't a high level of visible taxes on income etc, but what I noticed is that the cost of goods and services were noticeably higher, an indication to me that there are hidden taxes in the price of what you pay for. |

Less so than other countries. The only two things that really play a part are import duties and/or tariffs, and sales tax. Beyond that, there's nothing. Compare that to the US where you have municipal, county, state, and federal taxes, levies, fees, duties, and subsidy recoveries.
Prices may be different, but you can't read anything into it beyond "prices are different". You certainly can't go from"prices are higher" to "therefore taxes must be hidden and higher". Unless, of course, you want to try and say that the prices for goods and services are the same the wolrd over... :)
It's true: this post has no real point. |
