yes. Experience varies with the local teacher, who is officially in charge of the class. Some ALTs have reported nearly complete control, while others are relegated to being human tape recorders. Some are tolerated by the local teacher, while others are taken under their wing, and still others are shunned. Case by case.
In Japan, ALTs come in 2 varieties: those on the JET programme (with far better support and pay) and those hired through dispatch agencies (with less support, lower pay and far more contract problems). |
