Hi all
I was wondering if the Temporary Alien Registration Certificate/Paper is considered the same as an Alien Registration Card ie can be used the same way until the card is picked up. If so, would it be possible to get a Japanese licence (switching from an Australian licence) using the temporary document rather than an Alien Registration Card?
Any advice would be very helpful

You don't have to switch for 12 months after arrival. Why would anyone switch early?! |

The reason for getting a Japanese licence early instead of using an International licence for 1 year is predominantly for I.D. purposes rather than driving. Apparently, Softbank has a problem with an A.R.C. that is valid for one year - particularly with an iPhone package. A Japanese licence seems to be a good work around. |

My ARC will need renewing next year too since my visa is only for 1 year. Softbank didn't have a problem with it. I didn't even have my ARC in hand when I went in; only a piece of paper that said I had been to register.
Maybe you should just try in a different branch and see what thet say. |

Thanks Seklarwia:)
This gives me hope. Would you mind letting me know which Softbank store you went to and also whether you signed up for a plan.
Thanks

I went to the Bic Camera in Omiya and got my phone with just the paper too. It didn't matter which carrier, all of them said I was ok. |

Unless you are in my neck of the Nagano-ken, it might not be possible to visit my local branch in particular
I opted for a contract phone since PAYG is quite expensive. My branch obviously doesn't deal with many foreigners, because they had to check out exactly what their policies were which took a couple of hours. So I think the people in your branch were just confused. Just go to another and make sure you take a native if you are not fluent in Japanese - it will make things much easier.
They have an English edition of a price plan magazine that has the requirements for anybody wanting to sign up. You pretty much just need to be here legally, a proper address, photo ID (passport, ARC or Japanese license) and a bank account/credit card. Maybe you should ask for that and point at it everytime they tell you something isn't possible. |
