JK Rowling became a writer.
Have you thought of getting a copy of "What Color Is Your Parachute?"
You can also save and go back to school- get a postgrad in another work area and work in that.
Public Relations and possibly Human Resources are two areas that many JETs get into. The most common thing JETs seem to say they are doing is "Getting my MA". After which MAYBE they can get a job, it depends on what their MA will be in.
Basically, you can get into whatever you're qualified to get into. If you came overseas immediately upon graduation from university, then maybe you aren't qualified to do a whole lot else right now, and have to go back to school.
A LOT of people get back to their home country and flounder because they assumed that teaching overseas would help them get some sort of office job in their home country. |

I became a public school teacher and I love it! (But I only taught ESL for two years, and I had to go back to university for two more years to become a teacher.) |
I plan to become a public elementary school teacher as well. I am looking into Alternative Certification programs in Texas and New Mexico.

Ha, I am an idiot. Well I might still end up going to SIT in Oman. Getting a teacher's license and studying Global Management in Oman are both options. |

I had hoped by the title of this thread that people would be posting about what they wanted to do after "retiring" from ESL, as in mid 60s and now with their savings opening up a scuba diving shop in the Philippines or buying a home in Thailand.
I hope to retire to Mexico or another Latin American country where my social security check and my investments (401k and index funds) will go much further. Being from the USA the proximity will still allow me to return to visit relatives or be visited by the same. With thrift and proper planning I believe it is possible to do this on a TEFL salary, I am already well on my way in my 40s.
Anyone else want to share where they see themselves after retirement from a career in TEFL? |

Settle in a place where we have the right to own property (not my home country). Having a good-value, medium-sized, 2-bedroom apartment (in a relatively small village) with a balcony overlooking a small fishing harbour. In a country with an overall warm climate, where the vast majority of people speak English and where western food and other goodies are easily obtainable. A place where we have peace of mind without all the political and economic b*ll*cks that exist in many other countries .... including my own.
A place which doesn't cost a lot to live in. A place where medical treatment is more or less immediate, of a reasonably good standard, of good value and can be trusted. A place which doesn't levy ridiculous taxes and unjust costs on the population like UK council tax, HIPs, maintenance fees, land rental etc . A place where we are not constantly 'spied' upon by the authorities (UK).
A place where we can be left alone by the authorities to live out our final few years on this planet but also a place where we can make good friends. A place where public transportation is good-value, efficient and reliable.
An apartment within striking distance of an airport from where my wife (a journalist/news correspondent) can travel from to carry out her work .... while I sip ice-cold orange juice on the balcony overlooking the said harbour.
As far as what I would do ? Very likely, help my wife. She's got a hell of a job. Enough work for 3 people !
Best

So do you work at the Pilot? Or maybe so some jazz playing at the Pilot? Or the Pilot is just your hangout and you work doing something completely unrelated to either the Pilot or ESL? |

Why all the ugliness and hate?
She wrote a really, really excellent series of books that got huge, huge numbers of kids away from their video games and TVs and reading. Books that adults like as well, and ones that are in British English so the voice is different than what North Americans are used to. The books are being turned into major motion pictures that generate a lot of profit for everyone involved.
She's become a multi-millionaire because of it, and deservedly so.
She uses some of this money to contribute to charity.
Is it just because the two characters you wanted to get married didn't? |

I don't follow her life, but plenty of my student have told me that she was getting or is getting sued for stealing someone else's ideas. |

Dear naturegirl
This may be what they were talking about:
A statement from Bloomsbury claimed the allegations of plagiarism were 'unfounded, unsubstantiated and untrue'.
'JK Rowling had never heard of Adrian Jacobs nor seen, read or heard of his book Willy the Wizard until this claim was first made in 2004 - almost seven years after the publication of the first book in the highly publicised Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and after the publication of the first five books in the Harry Potter series', the statement said.
It continued: 'Willy the Wizard is a very insubstantial booklet running to 36 pages which had very limited distribution. The central character of Willy the Wizard is not a young wizard and the book does not revolve around a wizard school.
'This claim was first made in 2004 by solicitors in London acting on behalf of Adrian Jacobs' son who was the representative of his father's estate and who lives in the United States.
'The claim was unable to identify any text in the Harry Potter books which was said to copy Willy the Wizard. This claim is without merit and will be defended vigorously'."

A previous suit was dismissed:
"In 2002, Rowling was sued by an American writer, Nancy Stouffer, who claimed that Potter had been stolen from Stouffer's The Legend of Rah and the Muggles, which featured a character named Larry Potter. An American court not only ruled against Stouffer, but said she had lied to the court and doctored evidence to support her claims. In 2003, Rowling successfully sued Dmitry Yemets, the author of Tanya Grotter and the Magic Double Bass, a Russian children's book, for lifting major plot elements from her Potter books. Yemets argued that his book was a parody, but the courts ruled for Rowling."
I can't judge about "Willy the Wizard", but it's not at all uncommon for highly successful authors to be accused of plagiarism on all sorts of very frivolous pretexts (couldn't resist the pun.). |

Naw, I was speaking to the quote by her when they were doing casting calls for the Harry Potter character if she would consider an American playing the part. Her response, and I'm paraphrasing here as it has been years and years was something like" "An American could never play a proper British boy". The fact that she is Scottish was even more infuriating.
Isn't that what actors do? Act? Nationality doesn't play into it or Minnie Driver (British) wouldn't have played in "Grosse Point Blank", Eric Bana (NZ) wouldn't have played a U.S. Delta Operative in "Black Hawk Down" and "House" would have the brillance of Hugh Laurie (again, British). I could go on and on...
One can only suppose that she believes that Superman actually can fly???
She's a jerk!
