I've been in Istanbul doing research about different schools and their conditions and terms offered. Finally found a great one, and will be starting there soon, but I thought about all the wasted time I've spent just visiting places that wouldn't give me enough information before having to trudge half-way cross Istanbul. Would it be a good idea to share all the contracts I've turned down here, along with their pay scales as I know them, for the benefit of all? Would people be offended? I would hope people would contribute and find it useful.

They offered 2600 TL, plus 800 USD housing stipend for the 2009-2010 academic year. Really good people, and I cry to think I missed the boat on this one and they hired someone else Sad But again, great people. If you're lucky enough to get an opportunity to be here, it would be well worth considering. Here it is:

3. BENEFITS

The Appointee will receive;
$1000* as a settling in allowance at the start of employment.

Accountable baggage allowance from the country of origin:
Europe up to $500* upon show of receipt
The United States/Australia/New Zealand/Canada/South Africa up to $750* upon show of receipt
Other countries of origin do apply and the accountable baggage allowance given will be considered upon application.
For teachers recruited in Istanbul accountable baggage allowance can be claimed for within a three month period of signing.

Local (Turkish) medical insurance is provided which is also partially honored internationally.

The appointee will receive annual net $9600* housing contribution.

Plane fare is paid coming to Istanbul from country of origin at the start of employment and going back to the country of origin at the end of two (contract) years. Upon completion of two contract years, the appointee will be offered the ticket or the value of an economy class flight for a single person (in YTL.) priced on 31st May.

Hisar Schools will assist in the settling in of the appointee by offering 2 weeks hotel accommodation (the hotel will be the choice of Hisar Schools) during which time the appointee will be assisted in finding suitable housing. If the appointee is unable to find suitable housing after 14 days, the cost of staying at the/a hotel will become his/her responsibility.

Appointees are encouraged to find suitable housing using �emlak� offices (real estate agents). The emlaks will charge approximately one month�s rent for using their services. Hisar Schools will loan up to 1.000,00 YTL. to the appointee to cover emlak fees. Money will be deducted from the appointee�s salary over a period of 6 months. If the emlak fee exceeds 1.000,00 YTL., it is the responsibility of the appointee to make up the difference.

Hisar Schools will loan the appointee up to $1000 to cover the landlord�s deposit. Upon completion of the housing contract, the appointee will retrieve the deposit from said landlord and return it to Hisar Schools. If damages are incurred it is the responsibility of the appointee to make up the difference, i.e. Hisar Schools will expect the entire deposit in full from the appointee/landlord.

If the appointee decides to rent accommodation without using an emlak, it becomes the responsibility of the appointee to cover the landlord�s deposit.

For those teachers recruited in Istanbul there is a three month window from the 1st of September to the 30th November where the appointee can move house and HEV will assist in the moving costs as stated in point�s g, h and i.

To assist in start up costs, new appointees may take an advance of their first salary with the maximum amount being that of half their salary. The service is also offered throughout the academic year. All advance requests must be received by the 15th of each month.

Free lunch and transportation (according to the route) is provided on school days.

An airport transfer �meet and greet� service is offered to all new appointees arriving from outside Turkey.

*Any amount indicated in �$� above, will be paid in YTL. in accordance with the Turkish exchange rate. Payments will be made along with the monthly salary.
4. DATES OF CONTRACT

5. DATE OF PROMOTION and INCREASES : End of first contract year.

6. TERMINATION OF APPOINTMENT :

A decision by the founder or the teacher not to renew the appointment shall be communicated in writing to the other party at least a month prior to the expiration date of the appointment. Otherwise the appointment will be automatically renewed.
7. GENERAL CONDITIONS :

Appointments ending during the course of the academic year shall be automatically renewed until the end of the academic year.

Upon signing the contract, teachers will undergo a professional development program (PGPY). Teachers will work closely with their level coordinator, the department head, their peers (in the case of peer observations) during the PGPY process. Upon evaluation of the teacher�s performance, this will determine whether their contract will roll out for a second year.

The appointee agrees to perform his/her duties in accordance with the rules and the regulations of the Law on Private Educational Institutions, pertinent to ministry regulations.

The appointee is paid his/her monthly salary in Turkish Liras (YTL) at the end of each month.

The appointee is paid on a 12-month basis.

The appointee will not make any derogatory statements against the Institution and Administration.

This appointment is terminated if the appointee does not fulfill his/her duties or if the official approval is withdrawn by Ministry of Education and/or Ministry of Labor.

Conditions not stated above are governed by the Law on Private Educational Institutions and ministry regulations.

Disputes arising from the application of this agreement can be taken to Istanbul courts.

Adherence to service bus departure times from point of pick up and school premises must be complied with. It is not the responsibility of the driver to wait for the appointee and if the appointee is late and misses the bus, it is the appointee�s responsibility to find alternative transportation.



8. SPECIAL CONDITIONS

A teacher is required to fulfill all kinds of duties given by the School administration as his/her natural teaching responsibility apart from the general conditions specified above. In accordance with the programs and practices determined and conveyed at the beginning of the academic year by the instructions and orders of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Turkey, a teacher is required to teach according to the weekly schedule, participate in meetings, discussions, individual activities, examinations, seminars and conferences that are planned and announced in advance, and that will take place on any day of the week.
He/she is required to submit the notes taken in conferences and seminars in which he/she has participated outside school to his/her department and the school administration, in writing. Any unexcused absences in conferences and seminars as determined by the school will be subject to deduction of hourly wages from the salary.

In accordance with the regulations and instructions of the Turkish Ministry of Education and with the existing program and practices of the school, as stated at the beginning of the academic year, aside from the number of teaching hours stated above and as a natural result of his/her teaching obligations, the teacher will also be expected to assume any other related responsibilities and / or duties - such as � clubs, counseling, educational activities, etc. - as may be assigned to him/her.

The teacher will be expected to attend all faculty meetings and parents� conferences, to be in close contact at all times with the class teachers and the school administration, to be present at those assignments given to him/her by the school administration, and to perform his/her duty, to come promptly to his/her duties and not depart early, to be present with his/her class at the weekly opening and closing ceremonies of the school, and to perform any duties, either as a teacher or proctor, in all tests and examinations to which he/she may be assigned by the school administration.

The monthly salary stated in the contract includes all legal rights recognized by the laws, regulations, decision of the Cabinet numbered 86/10340 and other clauses and have not been specified in this contract and those that will be recognized in laws to be issued in the future. The monthly salary constitutes an equivalent payment in return for 30 hours of teaching per week. It includes administrators� monthly salary, vocational difficulty bonus, educational aid, base salary, additional payments covered under social aid and additional teaching hours. It also includes additional teaching payments apart from monthly total salary. No additional teaching payments are made apart from the total monthly salary.

The teacher will be paid only for those additional hours (above required 30 hrs.) that he/she actually teaches and should he/she miss classes, or arrive late, or leave early, for whatever reason, except on general public holidays and official school vacations, he/she will not receive payment for those teaching hours.

The additional material benefits arising from the administrative duty assignment, etc. shall be valid during the period of this assignment.

It is understood and agreed that the teacher will pay the income tax and other charges due to the Turkish fiscal authorities, which are in existence at the effective date of appointment agreement or become effective during the course of appointment. (Net salary shown on the first page of contract, is paid after income tax is deducted from the Gross salary.)

As long as the teacher�s contract continues, a performance evaluation is made according to the established Professional Development and Performance Appraisal Procedures (PGPY) in accordance with the present program of the school and disciplinary regulations.

This contract shall be valid and in effect only by approval of the Ministry of Education, and conditions of employment will continue in case the clauses of the laws and regulations and the requirements are complied with. If the contract is not approved by the Ministry of Education and/or the approval is withdrawn for any reason, the said contract will be terminated in accordance with the personnel regulations, codes and ordinance of the school. All kinds of terms that are not included in this contract but is in practice, limited with the duration of service, and pertaining to working conditions, housing and other side benefits will be subject to and carried out in accordance with the personnel regulations, codes and ordinance of the school.

After a full year�s service, any monetary health benefits received from the Turkish Social Security Health and Welfare Benefits Organization, should be returned to the school within 3 days after collection and only on this condition will the teacher be automatically paid his/her full salary for the period of three months. The payment of the teacher�s salary after this period will be decided by the school administration.

Part-time teachers are required to participate in meetings of department heads, class teachers meetings, and administrative meetings. These teachers may not be assigned supervision duty, class advisor�s duty, etc. They are not paid salary for the summer vacation.

The employer determines the per hour rate for part-time teachers. Payment is not made for lessons that are not held, not attended on time or left before the lesson is over.

Appointees are required to work in accordance with the educational and instructional policies and philosophy of the school, in harmony and cooperation with the school administration, school staff, parents and all units. They will perform all duties set for improvement and development of students who need additional academic support.

Teachers who cannot come to school due to illness or any other excuse, should immediately call their department coordinator or department head and HR Specialist. The teacher, who cannot come to the school because of sickness, must document his sickness that lasts up to two days with a report obtained from his/her doctor/school doctor, in the case where his sickness lasts more than two days, then he/she obtains the report from a general SSK hospital if he/she is subject to SSK (Turkish Social Security Health and Welfare Benefits Organization), and from an official doctor or state hospitals if he is retired. The reports shall be forwarded to the Human Resources Department. (This is applicable to cases of major illnesses which cause long term absence from school.)

During the academic year the teacher is required inform the school administration about his/her travel outside the city limits for the purpose of being assisted in case of emergency.

The teacher is expected to set a good example for his/her colleagues, co-workers, students and the environment by his diligence, success, appropriate dress, and appropriate behavior and attitude.

The teacher may have a 6 week vacation after schools are closed and all responsibilities related to education and instruction are fulfilled, unless otherwise dictated by the Ministry of Education. However, in case the appointee decides to hold in-service training during this period, the teacher is required to participate in this training.

The teacher may not privately tutor any student of the school and may not be employed by any other organization during his/her contract period.

According to the Work Law, the employer may terminate this contract before its ending date in case of negligent behavior to the terms of this contract, absence from work and incompetence, by informing the teacher a month prior to the termination date. According to article 17 of the Work Law, all legal responsibilities are fulfilled by the employer when the contract is not renewed. In case the appointee leaves his/her work without permission or excuse during the contract period; and in case of incompliance with article �p�, he/she has to pay the net salary amount for the remaining period as an indemnity.

Salaries are paid in Turkish Liras (YTL.), as stated in article �2g�. The personnel salary policy of the Hisar Schools is determined and declared by the Board of Directors of the Hisar Educational Foundation. A yearly, individually determined raise, determined by Hisar Schools� Salary System, will be paid to the employees and shown as an increase in monthly salary during the next contract period (September 1, 2010� August 31, 2011)

The teacher will agree not to smoke in any area other than that assigned by the administration, according to Law Nr. 4207.


All kinds of disputes between parties arising from implementation of the general and special terms of this contract will be referred to and resolved by the Istanbul Courts of Justice.

An economy class air ticket to and from London will be provided by the employer or the price of a standard ticket from London to İstanbul will be reimbursed at the beginning of the contract and the price of an İstanbul to London ticket will be reimbursed at the end of the every school year(in two seperate payments) to the teachers who do not fly in from London.
A centrally heated and furnished flat shared by two will be provided to the teacher Common expenses of the apartment building is met by K�lt�r Hizmetleri A.Ş. whereas the electricity, water,gas,telephone, digital cable TV etc. expenses will be taken out of the teacher�s salary. School apartments are available from 1st August and are required to be vacated by the 15th of July upon completion and non-renewal of the teaching contract; this is to allow proper cleaning and maintenance.
Lunch is served on school days, for which no charge is made. The teacher is responsible to eat lunch with the students.
There is a school doctor or a nurse with whom the teacher may consult in case of sickness.The school physican is authorised to prescribe a report for leave of absence for sickness that continues up to 2 days (for sicknesses that are not treatable at school, the school doctor transfer the teacher to a state hospital)
Holidays:

a) There is a 2 weeks holiday at the end of 1st semester, and a summer holiday of six weeks at the end of the second term.

b) Official and religious holidays are observed as holidays.

c) The teacher whose religion is Christian is given one day off on Christmas Day.(Dec 25)

IV. DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS OF THE TEACHER:

The immediate superior of the TEACHER is the Head of Department, the Assistant Principals, and the Principals in that order. All personnel working for the School are subject to �the SCHOOL�s PERSONNEL REGULATIONS.�
The teacher can be asked to teach (subjects and clubs) up to 30 hours a week when necessary.Actual teaching hours are a maximum of 24 hours, the remaining 6 hours will be for extra curricular activities & recess duty.
The teacher is under obligation to teach assigned to her/him at all levels and classes. There can be changes in the teacher�s weekly hours if approved by the principal and management.
The teacher may not give private lessons to any of the students of K�lt�r Schools. The teacher may not work at other schools, evening courses, Language schools or at any other organizations during the period of this contract.
The teacher may not accept presents either from parents or student in any circumstances.
The teaching days are in week days. There is no teaching in weekends.The teacher must attend teachers meetings, parents, and teachers� meetings, department meetings, conferences and trips on Saturdays as stipulated by the administration. The teacher will not be paid for these.
The teacher must contribute the development of policy,prosedure guideline and brochure which helps the improvement of education quality, education system and process and must not ask copyright fees or additional fees for these.
The teacher is under obligation to take one extra curricular activity if there are enough students.
The teacher is to be present on duty at a place appointed by the School Administrations.
Whilst under contract to this school, the teacher may not leave this post nor change to a new post in another establishment in Turkey. If this does occur, then the teacher is liable to reimburse the school the whole cost of flights to and from Turkey as well as an amount equal to the salary which would be due to the teacher for the remainder of the contract period on that day�s currency.This condition can be waived in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the employer.
The teacher may never, either in class or outside it, use physical discipline to the students.
The teacher hereby accepts, states and undertakes that his/her below mentioned statements are correct and that he/she is fully aware that if his/her mentioned statements are not correct or incomplete, this will prevent him/her from practising the work which is the subject of the agreement and it creates a situation for him/her not to sign the agreement.
The teacher has worked as a teacher for more than two years at institutions listed in his/her cv.
The teacher has no record of legal and/or administrative punishment during his/her previous positions and he/she shall submit the documents to prove such situation to Employer or to related government offices.
The teacher does not have any health problems which may prevent practice of his/her job and will submit a health report if requested.
The teacher has no record of crime and there is no situation within his/her knowledge which may require security investigation.
He/she shall not have any rights or claims against Employer if his/her work permit is invalidated or he/she has been requested to withdraw from his/her job by authorized offices.
If either party does not conform to the conditions of this contract, then this party will be responsible for the consequences.
The validity, construction and performance of this agreement shall be governed by Turkish law. All disputes claims or proceedings between the parties relating to the validity construction or performance of this agreement shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of İstanbul to which the parties irrevocably submit.

THE TURCO-BRITISH ASSOCIATION (TBA)

TERMS & CONDITIONS

For Native-Speaker Teachers of English



1. Duration of Contract and Working Hours
The TBA offers a two-year contract, renewable upon mutual agreement, including a probationary period of two service periods (one service period = 4 weeks). One academic year comprises 12 service periods of 4 weeks each, and runs from October until the end of September. For each year the teacher will be entitled to a four-week paid holiday on successful completion of 11 full consecutive periods of teaching service at the TBA. The teacher will also enjoy the benefits of having a two-day Christmas holiday as well as all the Turkish public holidays and inter-term breaks observed during each year.

The TBA runs classes between 9.00 a.m. and 9.30 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays, and between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Contract teachers work a maximum of six days a week and take the remaining one full day as a day off; completing a total of 108 contact hours per service period, a contact hour being 45 minutes. These hours are spent in direct teaching, placement testing and grading and interviewing for TBA certificate exams, conducting Extra + Activities, planning, preparing, producing and monitoring supplementary teaching materials and tests. All TBA teachers are expected to prepare their lessons, mark tests and write reports outside their contact hours, if and when necessary.

Teachers are expected to attend all ELT meetings, seminars and workshops organised by the TBA.
Teaching may be classroom teaching or one-to-one, taking place on or outside the TBA premises.

2. PAYMENTS & BENEFITS
To cover the hours and duties outlined in article 1 above, the teacher will be entitled to the following payments and benefits:

a. The teacher recruited from abroad or locally will be paid the net sum of

TL100.- � about $ 75 at current exchange rates - on arrival.

This is a special settling-in bonus to be paid only once on commencement of the service contract.

The net salary for each service period ranges between $ 925 and
$ 1400, dependent on the applicant�s qualifications and experience, and the teacher will be given a salary quotation following the receipt of his/her documents. The local currency value of $1 has been fixed at

TL 1.5- until 30 September 2009 when the rate may be adjusted to allow for inflation and fluctuations in consumer price indices. Teachers will be paid the dollar equivalent in local currency.

c. The teacher will also be entitled to the following fringe benefits:



Towards his/her incoming travel expenses, the teacher recruited from outside Turkey will be paid a net total of TL 500.- following the successful completion of his/her probationary period.

The teacher recruited locally or from outside Turkey, will be paid
a net total of TL 500.- on the successful completion of the initial two-year contract, towards his/her outgoing travel expenses.



3. accommodatıon
The TBA provides the teachers with rent-free accommodation shared by one or two other TBA teachers, fully furnished with all essential household
items, and within a five to ten minute walk from the TBA.

The TBA will also pay the water, gas and electricity bills as well as the running costs of the rent-free flats. No other party is allowed to live in the flat without prior permission from the TBA.

4. WORK & RESIDENCE PERMIT PROCEDURES
The TBA undertakes to complete, in Ankara or at Turkish consulate abroad, the necessary paperwork, for which every foreign employee in Turkey is personally responsible, with regard to the teacher�s work/residence permits in line with current regulations.

5.PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE
The teacher subject to an acceptable medical history will benefit from a comprehensive private medical insurance during his/her first year of employment with the TBA.
6. SOCIAL SECURITY
The teacher will be employed under the Turkish National Social Security scheme.
7. REMINDER
The position advertised by the TBA is a full-time job and the teachers employed are not permitted to take on any other part-time or full-time jobs or privately to teach organised groups of students.

The position should not be regarded primarily as a means to travel around Turkey with teaching coming second. Priority must be given to teaching commitments at all times.

By the way, Leeds claims to have the contracts for all of these conservative schools in and around Istanbul, Bursa, Ankara, Gaziantep, etc. But their salaries are fixed at 2000 TL, whereas if you contact the schools directly, you can negotiate up to 1500 USD for the same work. They don't have to pay Leeds the agent fee, and pass the savings on to you in the form of this really weird contract.

Article 3- DEFINITION OF A NATIVE SPEAKER OF ENGLISH

A native speaker of English is herein defined by the following three criteria: he or she is a person all of whose childhood years, including all formal education (Primary School, Secondary School) and including all social activities, were spent outside of Turkey; who is a citizen of the United States of America, Great Britain and whose English-language skills, including pronunciation, are deemed by the School to be equivalent to those of an educated native speaker of English.

Article 4- WORK: STIPULATIONS AND RIGHTS


The following sections state the terms of work at the School and the requirements that the Teacher must follow while employed.

Working Hours and Conditions


The yearly work calendar is determined by the School Administration and the Teacher must adhere to it. Furthermore, the School Administration may assign a variety of duties, as well as exam preparation and invigilation, before and/or after the academic terms.

The Teacher may be assigned to teach at least 25 class periods per week. The schedule of classes is subject to change at any time.

The teacher must prepare lessons for each class every week and must show the head of department one week earlier. Teacher is responsible for all kinds of preparations, finding methods, searching materials, preparing exercises, quizzes and exams for the lessons. Depending on the number of the lessons school can give course book to the teacher or expects the teacher to prepare all lesson materials alone. If the school doesn�t give a course book, teacher must prepare all lesson materials alone.

If the Teacher is assigned more than 25 hours per week, the extra hours will be paid at the rate determined by the Ministry of Education.

One day each week the Teacher will be required to monitor the places designated by the School Administration; this duty occurs before the school day begins, during break times, and after the school day ends; the Teacher must give his or her lessons as scheduled. In addition, the Teacher must substitute for an absent departmental colleague whenever necessary.

Outside of the scheduled class periods, the Teacher is required to be present at parent-teacher meetings, test periods, departmental, grade, class and/or teachers� meetings, ceremonies, and celebrations, seminars, and all kinds of activities as determined by the School Administration. There is no additional payment for these duties.

The Teacher must follow all Ministry of Education regulations. All yearly plans, daily lesson plans, and grade papers must be kept properly, neatly, and up-to-date.

The Teacher is required to prepare and grade exams for his or her lessons and any other exams assigned by the School Administration.

The School Administration determines the start of the work day, class breaks and lunch breaks, the end of the workday and weekends in accordance with Laws 5580, 4857. With advance notice the School Administration may require the Teacher to work outside of school hours, attend weekend meetings, or perform other education-related tasks wherever needed.

The teacher is required to be at school from the beginning of the lessons to the end of lessons. Teacher is required to do any job which is given by school during the free hours.
Teacher may only leave with the permission of school administration on his free times at school.
Teacher may be assigned to teach the clup lessons on the weekdays from 9 to 4.

Teacher must make additional preparations for the winter and summer schools.

Whatever the reason is when the teacher doesn�t come to school, one day payment will be deducted from the total salary for each day.
Article 5- PAYMENT


Monthly net salary is $ 1500


The salary is paid in dollars between first and tenth day of the month.

The teacher will be paid for ten months.
Article 6- COMPASSIONATE LEAVE


At the discretion of the School Administration and upon presentation of official documentation, the teacher may be granted up to 5 days compassionate leave because of the death or serious illness of a close relative. School is the only authority to give permission on longer leaves.

In the above instances, the School is not responsible for any expenses incurred by the Teacher.
Article 7- HEALTH INSURANCE AND SICK LEAVE


The School Administration will provide the Teacher legal health insurance which is determined by Turkish social insurance Law after getting the wok permit.

The School will accept a medical leave of up to 2 days with a report from a hospital or school doctor. The teacher won�t be paid for these days.

Longer illnesses are considered on a case by case basis.. The School Administration reserves the right to terminate this agreement for reasons of ill health.

Illnesses caused through addiction to drugs or alcohol, or resulting from a previous illness not declared on application can result in this contract being immediately terminated. In this event the School, in principle, will have no obligation to the teacher.
Article 8- VACATIONS

The teacher is required to work until the end of June. School will organize summer schools in summer holiday and winter camps in the semester holiday. Teacher is required to work in summer schools and winter camps and there is no extra payment for these activities. The School Administration determines the annual leave dates in accordance with the Ministry of Education statutes. The Teacher may be required to cut short his or her vacation if the School Administration requires it. If the Teacher leaves Turkey during a vacation period, he or she must notify the School Administration in writing.

The School is closed for the observance of official, local, and religious holidays; however, the School Administration may require the Teacher to be present at school for an official ceremony.

A Teacher who wishes to have leave for the observance of his or her own religious holiday must notify the School Administration, which will consider the issue and decide.
Article 9- PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND CODE OF CONDUCT


The Teacher is directly responsible to their Head of Department for the content and method of their teaching.

The Principal, the Foreign Languages Coordinator, the Head of Department, or their designees, and officials from the Ministry of Education are entitled to observe the Teacher�s lessons at any time.

The teacher is expected to adhere to highest standard of professional integrity and conduct themselves in a manner, which conforms to the traditionally accepted standards of professional teachers in Turkey.

Private Erkul Primary School�s dress code governs the Teacher�s appearance. Dresses, trousers, and skirts must be neat and clean, ironed and plain. Shoes and boots must be of professional appearance. Sandals or slippers are not allowed. Hair must not be covered in the working place. Hair must be of a groomed, natural color. Hair for men should be short but the rule is actually that hair will be kept off the shoulders. Women whose hair is of exceptional length must keep it tied up or tied back. Men must not grow goatees, beards, or sideburns that exceed the earlobes in length. Moustaches are permitted provided that they don�t grow wider than the mouth or longer than the top of the lip. Nails must be kept clipped at a reasonable length. Dresses, shirts, blouses, etc without sleeves, exposing cleavage, or of tight fit are forbidden. Jeans or similiar attire are not allowed. Skirts should be midcalf in length and must not be slitted. Flip-flops, jeans, exposed tattoos, naked navels or piercings other than earlobes are forbidden. Tops must cover cleavage and d�collet� and must be long enough to cover midriff.


The Teacher is forbidden to provide private lessons for students without the permission of school administration.

The Teacher can not work for any other organization or individuals without the prior permission of the School.

Without permission from the School Administration, the Teacher is forbidden to make any statements to the press. The Teacher is also forbidden to speak about and/or to present any information at conferences about confidential school matters.

With regard to the press, radio and television, the following apply: The name �Erkul� along with school data should not be used. Permission to use �Erkul� in professional contexts must be obtained and the school is not responsible for actions of individuals. Furthermore, nothing said should bring the school into disrepute.

It is assumed all teachers accepting this contract are competent in their subject and are able to perform their stated teaching ability. In cases where this is not fulfilled, the contract will be terminated.

Without permission from the School Administration, the Teacher is forbidden to invite students to anywhere or to take students to his/ her house. The teacher cannot meet with the students or cannot do any activities outside school.
Article 10- DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES


The following offenses will result in disciplinary action being taken against the teacher.
Insulting the Turkish flag, insulting the Founder of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Atat�rk and his principles or Prophet Muhammed and the principles of Islam or any other religion.

Any action which is embarrassing to the School or to the Teacher;

Violence on the school grounds;

Sending any written paper or notification to the parents;

Absence of the teacher without any excuse ( Covering working hours )

Being late to the class or meetings more than once;

Not obeying the Erkul�s dress code.

Teacher�s behaviors ( in or outside the school ) must be suitable for moral and ethic rules and Turkish traditions and customs. Otherwise school has the right to terminate the contract.

When the school administrations understands the teacher is doing any activities not related with the education.

When teacher says anything against school, school administration, teachers, education system at school.

In the rare event that disciplinary action is taken against a teacher, two written warnings will be issued by the School administration and if further offenses are committed, the Teacher�s contract may be terminated. The Teacher will lose all claims to further remuneration.
Article 11- TERMS OF EARLY CANCELLATION OF CONTRACT


The School may cancel the contract without compensation on the rights given in Labor Law (code 4857); or in the Law concerning Foreigners Work Permit (code 4817) or in the Law of Private Education Institutions (code 5580); or for the reasons specified below:

The teacher�s work visa and residence permit are canceled by the Turkish Authorities.

The conditions specified under the Disciplinary Procedures (article 10) and professional standarts and code of conduct (article 9) .

The School is permanently closed.

Failure to attend school for three consecutive 3 days in a year.

When the teacher�s abilities to teach and performance in the class is not enough.
Article 12- COMPENSATION FOR THE EARLY CANCELLATION OF THE CONTRACT


Resignation of the Teacher for a new job before the contract terminates results in the obligation of the teacher to pay indemnity in cash to the School for the salaries that would have been paid from the time of resignation until the termination of the contract.
In the event that teacher demands an early cancellation of the contract for a reason not covered by the above point (Point 1), the reason/excuse will be considered by the School Administration and the Board. In case the reason/excuse proves to be capricious, unacceptable and contrary to professional conduct, the teacher is to pay the School three-months� salary compensation as a result of his/her early resignation.
If the Teacher cancels the contract for any reason other than those stated above, he or she must reimburse the School for all monies paid to him or her for airfare to Turkey.
If the School cancels the contract, it won�t provide air ticket to teacher�s homeland.
ARTICLE 13- TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS


Upon receipt of the appropriate documents, the School will pay the Teacher in YTL equivalent of the one way economy class flight to Istanbul from the home country in three months. At the end of the contract the School will provide the Teacher with a one way economy class flight ticket back to the homeland, Should the teacher wish to travel elsewhere, he or she must pay difference.
If the contract is renewed, the School will provide the Teacher with an economy class round-trip ticket to his or her homeland.

Excess baggage charges are the responsibility of the Teacher.
ARTICLE 14- PAYMENTS OF FEES AND TAXES AND FOR OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS



All taxes and other government related sums levied on the teacher�s salary by the Turkish government will be paid by the School.
The School will cover all work and residence permit-related expenses which are incurred in Turkey.

All Customs Duties are the responsibility of the Teacher, (for example, a stereo, a computer or other electronic equipment or a motor vehicle). The Teacher is also completely responsible for handling all the Customs procedures.
ARTICLE 15- ACCOMODATION


The employer must provide the Employee�s accommodation with furniture (one bed, one wardrobe, kitchenware, refrigerator, bedding, washing machine and cooking utensils).

The rent is paid by the school.

The teacher is responsible for all any other expenses of the house except for rent.

The flat is shared by only 3 people.

The cost of any damages in the house or on the furniture will be deducted from the salary of teacher.

If the teacher doesn�t want to accommodate where the school offers, it is the teacher�s responsibility to arrange his/her own accommodation. School doesn�t pay anything.

Teacher must vacate the house on the date school decides.

School has the right to change the teacher�s house when it is necessary.
ARTICLE 16- TRAVEL TO AND FROM WORK


The cost of travel to and from school is the responsibility of the teacher. Teacher can use the school service bus if the conditions are okay.

ARTICLE 17- SCHOOL LUNCH


The School will provide free school lunch for the teacher during term time on weekdays.
ARTICLE 18- TURKISH CONTRACTS


In accordance with the Ministry of Education regulations the Teacher must sign the Turkish version of this contract. However, for all intents and purpose this contract and the conditions and terms outlined herein will form the employment contract and all terms and benefits specified will be honored by the School.


ARTICLE 19 � This contract, dated ___________________ will be signed by both parties and prepared in two copies. For matters not directly addressed in this contract, the applicable Turkish laws will pertain.


ARTICLE 20- CONTRACT RENEWAL
This contract takes effect once the Work Visa is issued. This contract is valid for a period of _____________. If this contract is not renewed within two months of its end date, it will end as originally stated.


ARTICLE 21- DISPUTES
Any disputes which may occur in applying the terms of this contract will be resolved through the appropriate Turkish legal channels, viz. ________________________________

Holy mackerel. I was just offered the ab.-ment'd 2000/mo. from a guy in Ist. for a job in Bursa. Screw it then, if I can directly try to jiffy 1500 US with a school.

Adana or Bursa, here I come, Im leaving the Land of the Morning Sun.

Thank you very much, I have often wondered why teachers treat this info as if it were a state secret. Over on TSP we are also trying to put together an information sharing group about pay ranges, work permit situations etc....

The only info that i can share is that if you have Turkish citizenship, Maltepe Univ is paying 60tl per 50 min lesson, but they won't deal with foreigners and workk permits. Good part time gig for a foreign spouse/ naturalized citizen that's been here a while and needs day work.

You're welcome, but what's TP? I have some friends who have worked for Doga, and I have been promised their 2008-2009 contract soon. I'd like to contribute to any database if I can. I'd like to encourage other people to post current, or past, contracts and salary wages. Thanks for the feedback.

I know Doga's salary to be 1800 TL. But some teachers make up to 2500 TL. There seems to be a salary increase of about 100 TL for each year you continue to work there. I don't have a contract, but a friend sent me this regarding conditions for the 2009-2010 academic year:

This year we are not going to provide any housing for our native teachers. Rather, we will pay 300TL as a housing allowance.

The bonus will be as follows:

(1) The teacher will receive a travel bonus of (500 USD) upon completion of the contract. (July 2010)

(2) Teachers that stay for a further year will receive a (500 USD) bonus with their second salary of their second year (November 2010) at DOĞA and a 750 USD bonus with their second salary of their third year. (November 2011)


Working hours will be as follows:


(1) The Teacher has to present at school between 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Once a week, the Teacher may leave early with the student school bus.

(2) The Teacher is expected to accompany his/her class (es) throughout the day, outside his/her regular lesson time, from the time the children arrive (8.30am) until they leave (around 4pm). Teacher stays at school until 5.30pm for meetings and to prepare their classes.

(3) The Teacher may be asked to attend activities outside his/her regular working hours, including Saturdays and Sundays, but not limited to, parent meetings.

(4) The Teacher is to take part in all the responsibilities of a teacher, such as parent communication, speaking exams, assessment, portfolio presentations, organizations and departmental meetings, not more than twice a month.

There seems to be some debate about the travel bonus. I have personally never worked with this school, but trust this source. If anyone has any corrections, I'd appreciate them posting. I don't want to spread misinformation. Cheers.

It seems that schools in Istanbul at least are still offering a proper "package". At least you have a chance to save. I should also point out that you have quite a workload at these places and you don't get much of a chance to play the party animal esp as you have to be on the job at 8.30. Ouch! Good place to start though!

Thanks for all the info! By the way has anyone worked or heard any news on what it is like working for the Turco-British association I was offered a job and it seems that you are offered a good salary considering they pay for your accommodation and utilities. I am a little hesitant because it is a two year contract and it would be really unfortunate if you didn't get along with the people you work/live with. With my last contract I basically lived and worked with my roommate 24/7 and needless to say spending that much time with anyone can drive you crazy!! I was so thankful when the 1 year contract ended.

Also the contract asks you to work 6 days a week. Is that normal in Turkey?

Any feedback would be great! Very Happy

That's classy ... in the Gulf, people get up to $8,000 as a one-off settling-in bonus ..

Don't they simply mean, we'll pay $75 for your entry visa
