Most employers require a police report as part of the security check. Can't say if those offenses would necessarily count against you but they certainly won't help your application for a work visa.
The security clearance is done by the UAEpolice - and they have the final say. You can try - but I wouldn't be surprised if you were turned down. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised if you made it through - these things happened a long time ago. Interestingly, I think the drunk and disorderly would probably be considered the more serious of the two in the GCC. |

Have back-up plans for job alternatives. I don't like your chances. |

In this case problems might stem from the fact that some of these offenses are alcohol related, and the word "alcohol" will ring alarm bells.
That said, the Royal Air Force of Oman once managed to recruit a man who was actually wanted by INTERPOL. Quite how he got through the system remains a mystery, and he was a nightmare after he arrived in country, but if he made it through, then maybe others have done so too. |

In Canada we have a pardon process that can eliminate certain (minor?) convictions from your record after a certain period of time depending on what the crime was. As I have never had to use it, I am not sure of the logistics, or whether your country has a similar process, but if you are looking at working abroad (regardless of country) you may want to find out if this is a possibility.
As for whether you will get through, the only one that can answer that question for certain is...hindsight... |

Peter B, my answer here is exactly the same as your Saudi thread. No difference.
DUI will disqualify you from the visa; however, if you've been squeaky-clean in Thailand for 8 years, perhaps the Thai background check will suffice.
On another note, if your Emirati employer, pay package and projected savings are adequate for your needs, I would ALWAYS choose the Emirates before thinking of Saudi Arabia. |

I think the alcohol-related item will be viewed as much more serious than the theft-related one.
Then again - I've seen much more colorful characters than that, in the area. |

As far as I know, the security check is run by the UAE police who - to my knowledge - do not have authority to order a criminal background check on anyone in a country other than the UAE.
If the offenses you listed didn't happen in the UAE, I think you're pretty safe, unless you are requested by your potential employer to provide a background check record from your home country. Some employers request this, others don't...

Do you know which employers in the UAE request a police report MrS? I never provided anything related to this except a panel of fingerprints in Oman. I assumed that the security check covered something somewhere, but was never sure how far beyond the GCC it went.
I always considered the provision of a police report another of those things unique to Saudi.

VS, I am not sure who does and who doesn't require a police report in the UAE. I do, however, know for a fact that Qatar University does require a police report from the employee's home country as well as a full set of fingerprints, or at least they did a couple years back when a friend of mine got a job there.
Maybe someone else has that info for the UAE?

Most of the tertiary (desirable) employers require a report from the country you are residing in now - and perhaps your home counry if you are between jobs. |

Helen, when did this start? So, you're saying UGRU, HCT, ZU, ECAE, request a police report now?

I haven't heard that any of the recent hires at the HCT have been asked for a police check, whether contracted here or abroad. However, MAG does and possibly any other organisation which is involved with children. |

I can only speak from my present employer's requirements who is one of the above. |

Helen, so your employer (one of the 4 listed above) requires a police check and possibly MAG. That's a far cry from "most" desirable tertiary employers...
