Hi all, i'm pretty certain that this question has not yet been answered and will require the experience of any Americans who have attained Z-Visa's at a Chinese Consulate/Embassy in America.

My passport was issued in New York and I used to reside in New York with my family, but I now live in Hong Kong with a friend. I'm a US citizen obviously and I'm wondering if anyone has gotten a z-visa at a china consulate in the US in a state that was different from where they resided.

The reason I ask this is because each china consulate has its own jurisdiction and covers a their own set of states. It also says on the san francisco z-visa site that you should apply for the visa at the china consulate that has jurisdiction in the state that you live in.

I called and actually got through to a representative at the san fran chinese consulate and she told me that if your invitation letter says you must go to the china consulate in the USA and doesn't state a specific china consulate in the US, then you can go to any of the consulates in the US.

I'm sure I'm just worrying too much and that they'll just take my application and give me the z-visa since I have the working permit, invitation letter, and physical ready to go, but it would be great to hear some successful z-visa stories from people who were in my current situation.

I know the representative said it was fine to go to any US china consulate, but she also may not be the person stamping the z-visas so it may not be the correct answer.

thanks to anyone who can answer this long and tedious message.

If it does not indicate a specific consulate, you are free to use any. I recently used the Houston consulate, although my state is "governed" by the D.C. consulate. I would trust what those ladies at the Consulate say, that's what they do all day, issue visa's.
