I am wanting to move to Vietnam in October and I can't decide which certification would be better to attain. (CELTA vs. TEFL) My research thus far has led me to believe that in Vietnam it doesn't really matter which one you have. I am wondering if this true. Before I invest money to go to a school I want to make sure I choose the right one. I was thinking about the TEFL institute. It is two weeks in Cambodia followed by two weeks in Ho Chi Minh. Has anyone heard of this school and it's legitimacy? Also, if they really help you find work when you are finished? It has been difficult to make a decision and know which school to attend. I am in the U.S. currently and after I receive my certification I want to teach in Vietnam that is why I want to attend a school there since I will be going solo. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

In fact, an ESL certificate is all that is desired not always required.
IF you want a work permit then it's required and for that, in Vietnam it doesn't really matter which one you have.
Having said that, you'll need to consider what kind of job you'll want. the best schools will consider ESL certificates in the following order;
#1 - CELTA
#2 - TESOL
#3 - TEFL
BTW, you can get all 3 of these in HCMC or Hanoi much cheaper |

If you have the time and the money, why compromise? Get the CELTA and you'll never have to second-guess your decision. Get the TEFL and you'll always have this question hanging over you. Think long-term.
In any event, your certification must include an observed teaching component or it will not be recognized. |

Well said. Why Compromise?
Getting anything but the CELTA will only limit your options. Not a fan of it. Don't like it. Think it's completly overpriced, but hey, just get it so you can work anywhere from ILA - Outerspace. |
