I'd be grateful for any advice with regard to advertising private lessons in London.

Gumtree was pretty good until they started charging for ads. I'm also aware of some other sites like Viva Street, Craig's List and Hallo London but haven't had that much success with them.

Any tips would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

If you are in London right now, there is a huge demand for private IELTS lessons as students scramble to get the required grade (6.5 -7.5) to get into university by September.

Also, an equal demand for proof-reading dissertations, as MA students hand in usually in September/October.

For these, the best idea would be to post in the various union buildings, giving contact details, cost etc (about �20 an hour is average, but more for dissertation work).

If you are more interested in the more lucrative Japanese businessmen market (ie. �40 an hour or more), then you can place an advert in the free Japanese newspapers :

Eikoku news digest : <[email protected]>
Weekly Journey : Japan Journals Ltd, Classified Dept, 7-8 Market Place, W1W 8AG (don't know the e-mail).

For these two, you would have to pay about 75p a word to advertise, but well worth it. They will even translate your ad into Japanese if you want.

Thanks so much for the advice.

I actually have some students from the universities and they're kindly going to put some ads up for me in their union buildings now that school has started up again.

Those Japanese newspapers look promising too - it's not that expensive, I think it's probably worth giving them a go and if I don't get any responses I just won't do it again.
