Despite a binding cntract which stipulates "Shabaka has the right to offer an extension of the contract to October 1, 2009 to teach the summer session," teachers were paid to August 19 and sent their respective merry ways.
Equally disconcerting is "Problems concerning the details of this contract shall be settled by mutual discussion between Shabaka and the teacher. Shabaka will make the final decision if both parties do not reach an agreement."

I was recently dealing with these guys but got weeded out of a very large list of candidates because I rocked the boat. I wanted certain 'additions' made to the contract and the agent didn't like that. I did make some new TESOL contacts through this agent, however. He was stupid enough to send a single chain email to all the candidates early on. As many of those candidates got the weed-out treatment over the next week, there were many interesting conversations going on back and forth between the pollyanna candidates and those from Earth. |

Interesting. Someone else who is already there thinks that contracts count in the KSA. I've been told over and over, even berated over the issue, that contracts don't mean squat there.
Which is it, people? |

The binding of an Al Shabaka contract has the adhesive strength of flour paste.

In general, contracts matter, but in my experience they matter more in the employer's enforcement than in your own. In other words, if you get a contract, it is more binding on you than on the employer, unless you are willing and able to take legal steps to enforce it.
If the contract you receive is reasonable, sign it. If it is slightly unreasonable, you can gently request small changes. If it is completely unreasonable, don't try to negotiate it --- just walk away. They're not going to hire you anyway if you push to make MAJOR changes to a contract. The contract represents what they are looking for, and if you're not what they are looking for, you might as well give up on the job right now.
Just my opinion. |

And let's all please remember, it's the ARABIC version of the contract that (may - depending on how "reputable" your employer is) matter(s), NOT the English version. And I'd be VERY surprised if there weren't at least a few discrepancies between the two versions.
Regards,
John |
