Hi. Newbie seeking advice. First, context...
Undergrad in music ed, substitute taught, no cert of ESL yet but considering it depending on further research, seeking to teach in China or somewhere in Asia, ESL or pref finance related something - econ, acctng, finance etc. for a year while learning Mandarin, traveling, saving and perhaps completing grad school online.
Questions:
Is it possible to he time to complete online studies and the proper internet connections to do so?
Learn Mandarin at the same time?
Save money?
Go back into finance w/ out 'stigma' of teaching thereafter - ie trading, financial planning other than quant job? my thinking is they won't really care if i have the language, licensing and am in the area.
thoughts appreciated... i'm still dabbling, processing. my worst fear here in the states is that I'd have to go back to public school indoctrinating as there are so few jobs in finance unless i want to move to NYC or the East coast or work in a high-commission position at 120 hrs per week which allows NO time to finish grad school online.
thanks! |

I know in China there's a UK based uni that also has some unis in China, hope that makes sense. And need subject teachers. Sorry, I can't remember the name, but I bet if you posted on the china forum they cuold help you out. And the pay is MUCH higher than regular TEFL jobs.
Yes, you can do online courses while TEFLing, you should have enough time, especially in China.
Mandarin, if you put an effort into it, because if you look foreign, peopel will literally come up to you on the street and ask to be your friend to better their English. I had a couple of friends who were stopped and asked if they could take pictures with them because they were blonde. If you don't like foreign, say that you're from a non english speaking cuontry, of course, say this in Chinese, and you'll get more chances to practice your Chinese.
Save money, probably not in China.
Don't know about going back and teaching in your home cuontry. It woudl depend on what kind of job you got in Asia and whether it was at a uni that had branches in English speaking countries. |
