So I came to China to work for World English and they told me they are licensed to get a Z visa and resident permit.
So I come on a tourist visa and get to China.
Go to the school they start asking me to teach on a tourist visa until they can get me a real visa. I say ok, it will be a short time right?
I start talking to another teacher who has been there a while he says he is working on tourist visa for 6 months!
I explain i was told I would get a new visa as soon as I arrived. He laughed and said they told him that as well.
So I ask the hr person the situation and the center director. They don't give me an answer.
After a week they tell me this - the center I am in is new but if I go to another province for a week to work they will get me a working visa from there and I can come back to this center once I get the resident permit.
So now I am duped by this school.
They have not come through on this promise of a working visa that they advertised and now giving me a run a round. PLUS they are still advertising for full time teachers even they can not legally hire any.
I went with a Chinese friend to the local police station and asked them if it was legal to work in this city with a resident permit issued in another province, they of course said no. I would have to apply for a new visa in this city.
All I can say is that if you receive an offer from World English in Wuxi, Shanghai or other cities you should run.
They also advertise for part timers pretty heavy as basically all the full time teachers that have worked there quit and the whole Chinese staff has turned over 2-3 times since the center opened about 4 months ago.
Now I have to look for a real job that can supply me a real visa. |

hi fred, i hope you'll forgive me for being a little brusque here, but you've already worked in china, and been on this forum for awhile. Did the World Eng. Ctr. tell you to arrive on an L visa, and they'd send you to HK to get a Z visa later? Or did they tell you that they'd convert your L visa into a Z visa/residence permit? You must have been aware that this is seldom done anymore.
in any case, once you found out they were able to get you a Z visa (before you accepted the job), why didn't you ask them to process the paperwork for that visa, and send it to you so that you could get it BEFORE you arrived in China?

You didnt request to speak to/contact this other FT before arriving to get the real story? That's SOP for any job hunters familiar with working in China.
You obviously have/had some knowledge of the visa situation in this country, as evidenced by your contribution to this thread:
job offer in jiangsu advice needed
I think you need to take your share of the blame for this duping |

I was told to come back on a tourist visa and they would convert it to a resident permit.
That can still be done in this province. |
