Hi everyone,

I have received an offer for a placement working in a small residential city in Aichi Prefecture, about 20-30mins away from Nagoya. I have a few days to decide if I want to accept but can't really find much information about the place.

Anyone have any experience or information they could share? Not sure if I should be too specific, but I have been told that there isn't really much in the city I'll be located in and that most of my socialising and proper shopping will have to be done in Nagoya. Not sure what to do!

Perhaps if you describe the work, not the social environment, it would help to give you advice. Which one is more important to you, and why?

20 - 30 mins is nothing, just a short hop on the train in this country. Nagoya area is baking hot in the summer but very central. A friend I had who lived there for a time said it was her favorite place purely for the ease of access to all other parts of the country.

Thanks for the replies! I am mainly wondering about the cost of living in the area as wikipedia says the economy is one of the highest places in Japan.

The work I will be doing is teaching a mix of adults and children aged 6 - 12 which I am not too worried about, it's an AEON school. Apparently the apartment they have found for me is within 15 minute walking distance of the school too.

Is there much of a social life in Nagoya itself? I was also wondering if there will likely be many other for foreign English teachers in the area. Thanks

Not sure what part of Aichi your are going to be living in, but if you are within 20-30 minutes of Nagoya you won't have any trouble meeting other foreigners. The main foreigner watering holes here are Shooters, The Hub, Misfits, Bar 8, and OXO. They are all close to pretty close to Nagoya Station. Mavericks, The ID Club, and The Plastic Factory are probably the main night clubs. Culturally, there isn't as much in Nagoya, but if you get outside the city there's a lot more to see and do. Though, if you like Sumo Nagoya is great in the summer time. If you are looking for fellow hobbyists head to the International Center in Nagoya and pick up a copy of the Nagoya Calendar. It lists all the different groups that meet on a regular basis. I think it is online now as well.

Thanks steven, that's exactly the sort of thing I was wondering How are general expenses for food and things in the area compared to other parts of Japan? (if you know).

Hi Rezz,

Food, transportation, movies, ect will be about the same as every where else. Rent though, compared to Tokyo or Osaka will be a little better. 80,000 yen a month will get you a nice sized 3DK here. 1DKs go for around 50,000-60,000 yen. Since you will be living outside of Nagoya your rent might be even lower.

I've also heard cars are a little cheaper here, but I don't own one so I don't know for sure.

Congrats on the placement, is that the kind of location you were hoping for?

Have they given you a departure date? I'm still waiting to hear about a placement, fingers crossed it shouldn't be too long.

I've heard a lot of good things about living in smaller / quieter areas, your sure to pick up more of the language.

Thanks jerky! I have accepted the placement as it does seem to match my preferences quite well. Plus being only 15minutes away from Nagoya city means I get the best of both worlds I hope

I'm sure you should hear something soon, my departure date is 5th of Feb 2010.
