There is no need for anyone to return to their country to renew a Z visa...or even an L visa.
Depending on your situation an L visa can be extended at the PRC in the city which you live. A trip to Hong Kong, Macao, Vietnam or S. Korea most certainly will do the job.
The Z visa can also be granted in any country outside China...with all the proper documents from the employer. |

I disagree witht he last part. MOST embassies requrie you to be either a citizen or a legal resident in the country you are applying in. |

Maybe most embassies but not so in China.
I've gone to HK from China on my L visa with all the necessary documents from an employer in China and had no problem abtaining a Z visa. There isn't a problem doing this in China. |
