I have traveled the world for more than 47 years and found that people that are not open to other cultures and find that not everyone in the world lives like us, in a civilized world `quote`.(Who's to say what is civilized?) Which is a joke for me.You have to respect other peoples way of life, even though they might not have the same comforts or traditions. This is the beauty and experiences of traveling.I find when you are opened to other cultures and except them for who or what they are, you will learn a lot of things and wisdom from other people.Anyway,my mother had a saying; You get treated, the way you let people treat you.So, be nice. Very Happy

Isn't it "treat others the way, you, yourself would want to be treated"?

That' sounds right! Maybe I should have said; `Infinite patience produces immediate results, `in all aspects of of life.

What about people that are not open to other cultures?

Though that appears to be changing somewhat with all this globalization.

What's a joke for you? That not everyone in the world lives like us? The notion that we're civilized and the rest of the world is not? What?

Why? And what constitutes "respect"?

This is the beauty and experiences of traveling.
I guess that depends on what you mean by "traveling." Being a tourist is not the same as actually living in different countries.

Quote:
I find when you are opened to other cultures
That depends on what you mean by "opened to." Opened by whom? What if I don't want someone else opening me up to other cultures but, instead, want to open myself up to them? Why do I have to be "opened to" other cultures as opposed to being open to them?

Quote:
and except them for who or what they are,
Except them from what? To what are they the exception? What if I don't want to except them but, instead, want to accept them? Would that be okay?

you will learn a lot of things and wisdom from other people.
And, hopefully, they from you. But it sure as hell isn't going to happen if you're just a damned tourist hanging out in the tourist traps of the world.

Your conclusion "so be nice" doesn't fit with "you get treated the way you let people treat you." You can be as nice as you want but if you let people walk all over you and take advantage of you and the like then that is how you will get treated - according to your mother's wisdom.

There a little place in the corner of Hyde Park where the OP can get everything off his chest every Sunday.

I would've suggested another place to pontificate, but the Pope's got that covered. Rolling Eyes

Just out of curiosity, what prompted this thread? You're talking to people who've seen quite a bit of the world, and not just from a tourist's perspective. I'd like to believe that we already know what you're trying to tell us.

Aufmerksamkeit! This tread was directed towards a conversation that I have read about teachers working in China at some school. I must say; that I found your response to my point of view amusing and analysis. I just wanted to convey that some people should be more sensitive, compassionate, towards misunderstandings or have egocentric attitudes on any topic. For the people out there that can relate to what I'm saying; `More power to you`.If, you still don't know what I mean? Have a nice day. Very Happy
