Have a tall mountain bike, found a way to bring to Thailand.
Are bikes useful in Thailand? Countryside, small cities, or big cities?
If I don't bring it, is there a decent selection of tall mountain bikes at affordable prices (i.e. under $200 usd)?
Also, can mountain bikes be transported around within Thailand, are buses or trains able to do this without policies against it?

Hi Porlestone,

I came to Thailand and took a look before deciding if to bring my bike and decided not to.

From my experience catching buses around Thailand there is lucky to be enough room on the bus for normal luggage let alone a fully assembled bike. From my experience on the roads in Bangkok I would not consider riding a bike on the roads as they are just no user friendly for cyclists.

In the smaller towns bikes are an acceptable form of transportation.

Bangkok is way too dangerous, except in quiet suburbs.

For teccy stuff and high-end repairs there are very few specialist shops, and those are in BKK (like Probike near Lumpini Park).

There are good MTB tracks and stuff around in the north, and there are some meets--but Thailand is not big on MTB-ing. Most folk are poor and their bikes cost 15 dollars in Walmart equivs. They use bikes as your grandfather did, for getting to somewhere or to the local rice shop. There isnt really the whole MTB enjoyment thing here apart from a few thousand people in a country of 60 million plus.
