Academy school of English has an ad on daves that says they pay $1700 US plus flight and accommodation. This sounds too good to be true to me. Do employers in Turkey usually pay flight and accommodation?
Has anyone heard of this school?

Any info would be appreciated

Do you think $1700 US a month is good?
It is low actually compared to most jobs here for teachers.
Flights and accommodation plus $2000 - $2500 US a month is more usual.

If you still want to go for it check the accommodation contract - it may be shared, be unfurnished or worse leaking and with a broken fridge. Do you pay your own utilities? Gas costs can be expensive here in winter. Not that you can tell all that from a contract. Just be careful Smile
BTW Sorry no specific info on that school from me.

I agree with Eclectic. The ad doesn't mention how many contact hours. Otherwise, I thought it looked good.

Apologies if I have offended you all Embarassed
I just honestly know others who get at least $2000 US a month and seem to need it to live in Istanbul. Depends how frugal you are I guess.

The exchange rate is ok right now for US$ = TL (1.49) but I remember when it was 1.14 less than 2 years ago.......if it drops or the TL strengthens and you are on a low salary it can be very miserable indeed.

All I am saying is there might be a better paid job out there if you look around a bit Smile

Keitepai,

Where do the the people who make $2000 work? No need to apologize, I have never lived in Turkey, so I really don't know. Do you teach in Istanbul? I imagine Istanbul can be expensive depending on your lifestyle. I don't eat out or party much anymore. Maybe I should start again. Round two, here I come.

well... in K-12 schools people make this kind of money, I mean between 2000 USD - 2500 USD, with accomodation, but it's hard work, few survive. I myself make 2000 USD + accomodation+ insurance, private and government and there are other teachers in my school who make more than me, actually most of them... but I tell, the work is just for MEN!!! Smile)) Even if you're a woman you gotta become a MEN!!! Like macho, macho men, having to deal with THE KIDS, parents, principals who are scared to death of the parents, classroom teachers, etc. is no piece of cake... maybe if you're making your humble 1500 USD or somethinglike that, but keeping your health and sanity maybe be better... but if you're in for the money, go to any K-12 school and you'll be offered at least 2000 USD! Good luck!

Well....yes I am in a K-12 school so it is different than a language school. The top of scale would be about $US 2800 but there is a range depending on length of service and experience. Includes all as mentioned before.

Teachers stay for varied amounts of time and they have not all turned into MEN Laughing
Some schools are certainly more stressful than others but you have to relax and let some stuff go here in Turkey - no point getting angry at things you cant change....bad for your health Laughing Parents can be terrible but they are used to being pushy to get what they want - that is how it works. Once you calm them they are mostly decent people who just love their kids a lot and want the best for them.

I still think you need a good salary to live here comfortably. Actually the people I know at a language school teach low hours at the school and supplement with private lessons at 100TL per hour. So, they are on over $ US 2000 but not on the books. I couldn't believe that price but thats what they say Shocked
