Hello everyone i just want to say that I have heard of Dave's ESL cafe for awhile but i never register for the forums before.

My name is Daniel, I go to Northern Arizona University and I will graduate in the spring with an Elementary/Special Education bachelors degree. I have thought about going over seas for awhile now (Either Korea, China or Japan), but i am a little loss and a bit nervous on what i should do to apply to teach over seas. I don't know if anybody can help me, but what steps should i do in order to do such a thing. I am really sorry for asking such a silly question, but i guess i should answer my questions in the newbie forum.

Come to the Japan forum and read the FAQ stickies. Most of your basic questions will be answered there. Lurk and search and read before you ask questions that others have asked many times, too.

You have 2 options: come to Japan with $4000-5000 in your pockets at the right time (not now) and expect to start collecting a paycheck in 2-3 months, or stay home and apply to the far fewer places that recruit from abroad.

Get your state teaching license first, teach in a school district in Arizona for a couple of years, then you'll be able to apply for jobs at international schools (though you might not necessarily be teaching ESL). Now, if you're only wanting to go overseas to sort of try it out for a year or so, you might be able to find a few low-paying jobs without having a TESL certificate but your chances of getting a better job increase with having at least the standard entry-level certification such as you'd get from a CELTA, Trinity, SIT or similar generic course. As Glenski suggested, go to the forums for the countries you're interested in and explore them.

Are you looking to teach in a primary, secondary school or an institute?
