1. Get a job - if you have a tourist Visa (not Visa on arrival), it is "possible" to change it to a Non-Immigrant B Visa at Bangkok Immigration. This is assuming your school knows the paperwork involved and knows a few people at Immigration.
That's about it unless you leave the country and/or get married to a Thai.
I am not sure if it is possible to change a tourist visa to a Non-Immigrant O Visa (marriage visa) or a Non-Immigrant Ed visa (study visa) in Bangkok. Ask a Thai language school that offers Ed Visas. There are lots of them these days (google thai language course Bangkok). They may be able to help, but my guess is that you would have to leave the country first (could be wrong as I dont know much about the Ed Visa). This will involve having to pay for the course and attend a certain number of hours in a classroom studying Thai, but a relatively easy way to get a long term Visa. |

I assume you're talking about the 90-day non-immigrant B. But are you really talking about the 2 month + 1 month tourist visa? |

You get the automatic thirty days upon arrival. If you go to Ventienne Laos you can apply and get the free 60 day tourist visa ( a recent development) . You can get the non immigrant b visa from your home country.
I wish Id done that it was a hun dred quid and would have saved a lot of messing around. |

There is no way to get a 90 day visa in Thailand. You get the visa at a consulate or embassy before coming.
Depending on where you are staying in Thailand, you can take a bus to either Penang in the South, Phom Phen Cambodia or Vienteine. As previously stated, 60 day tourist visas are free. To get a non B visa you need a letter from a company that is willing to hire you. They cost 1,900 baht.
Tourist visa's (not 30 day entry stamp at the airport) can be changed into a non B visa if you have more than 30 days left on it. With the paperwork from the school. As previously stated they only do this in BKK.
Tourist visa's cannot be changed to Non O marriage, but they can be changed to Non O-A retirement. At least I know 2 people who did 2 years ago.
Get your 60 day tourist visa in the country you are in now and then when you are here you can extend it for another 30 days at immigration for 1,900 baht. Once you find a job then just do a nice little visa run and get your non B not a big deal at all. |

I was told by a visa agent in Penang on my last trip there that anyone who has extended his 2 month visa an additional month or has any overstays (stamped in the passport), he more than likely will be denied a new 2 + 1 if he's had more than two in a year.
But know I was also told by a visa agent in Surrathani that I HAD to go into Penang with an exit ticket in hand, which is rubbish. |

If you have already extended your 2 month tourist visa the extra 30 days at immigration, Penang will not give you another tourist visa. You will have to go to Kuala Lamphur. A few weeks ago when I went to Penang, I met 2 guys who had to do this.
Penang has many rules and restrictions that other consulates don't have, but they are still efficient.
Just remember if you are getting many tourists visas time and again, eventually immigration will ask what you are doing in Thailand. Tourist visas are for only tourist activities. Generally speaking people that stay in Thailand for more than 6 months are not on holiday. I would advise getting the proper visa if you are working. |

Say if you are currently teaching in another country and want to go to Thailand only to persue a CELTA course. Can you use a tourist visa for that purpose and get the visa in that same country? |

If you mean, get the visa in Thailand, then no. I dont know of many,if any, countries where you can get Visas in the same country. Extensions, yes. Change of visa, in some cases.
BTW, to change the Tourist visa to Non-Imm B visa no longer requires a minimum amount a days remaining. In the past it was 20 days, but as far as I know, this is no longer the case.
If you are taking a CELTA in Thailand, just get a free touist visa before you come over. no worries. Ask your CELTA provider for the best option. They MAY be able get you an Ed Visa, but I don't think that is necessary. |

This is pretty much what I heard last time I did a Penang run. If one has any overstay stamps or fines or has extended a 2+1 for that extra month, he won't be able to get another one at Penang. At least not this year. They're cracking down hard trying to weed out those who teach on tourist visas. In other countries one can teach on certain non-work visas albeit it is 'illegal'. The government turns its head and lets the practice happen, however. I wonder when those countries will start to crack down like Thailand has. It could be just a matter of time. In every case, if the crackdown happens, getting a non-work visa renewed will become a royal pain from hell. In one of those countries, you're nothing but a hole in the air if you don't have the work visa and permit. You can't register a phone to your name, open a bank account, et al. This is enough of a pain. Throw in a crackdown and I imagine it'll become really fun to work in that country if you're not working on the proper visa. |
