New to Saudi.. I have a question about a job offer. I was interviewed for Iman Mohammed University, which I understand is very conservative.. Contract pays 12000 plus housing , airfare ect.. But I would come in on a Government Visit Visa, and return to my home country during the break in January to apply for a work visa.. According to Education Experts they are paying for all of this extra transportation.. IS THIS A BIG RED FLAG>>

What kinds of issues could this cause me?

Also a concern I have is blogs that mention real contracts once you are on the ground in Saudi that are different from the contract I was emailed. I have to make a decision soon and am looking for input from some people that are experienced in working in Saudi..

Coming to work as a teacher in Saudi on a government visit visa means that:

you will be, more-than-likely, given a six-month visa that specifically states that you are not allowed to work;

expected to leave Saudi every 30 days and return (make sure that your company is going to pay up front for this or you could find it very expensive travelling every month and waiting for your company to reimburse you);

you cannot own a bank account;

your chidren, if you have any, will not be able to LEGALLY register at a school unless they have residency permits;

you cannot own a car, although you can rent one;

unless the university help you finding accommodation and, because they are a university landlords etc., just assume they are obeying the law, (when in actuality they are breaking it) so they don't ask you too many questions, then it's going to be difficult explaining to prospective landlords or esate agents why you don't have a residency permit, which they will normally ask to see before you rent a property. Likewise, if you live on a compound you will, at some stage, need to show them your residency permit, unless you're living on a compound and paying so much money that no-one cares as long as the rent is paid and they really believe that you are a consultant for the Saudi government and that you fly in and out of Saudi on a regular basis and can afford the 50 or 60 thousand dollars a year to live on the compound. I'm assuming that, based on the package you mentioned, that this is not going to be the case;

if you're told that you have to go back to your home-country in order to return on a work visa in January that means you're probably going to have to make at least two visa runs abroad.

I'd accept the offer. The question is what your alternatives are. The problem with going back to process the work visa isn't so much the travel, as the money you will spend while you're hanging around in the home country, often with no base.

I have a solid base to hang out in so that will not be a high expense. I actually like the idea of a 2 1/2 month test drive.
