The action against the scholar came a few days after his controversial statement questioning co-education at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), which was officially opened by the king on Sept. 23 in the presence of several world leaders and renowned scientists and academics.

I disagree with the sheik, but he is discharged simply for commenting on his beliefs and being suspicious of a co-ed university? That is too bad.

Dear huntjuliehunt,
Among the number of freedoms not available in the Kingdom is freedom of speech. When the king decrees something, it's not a good idea to voice opposition to that publicly.

"who knows what wickedness awaits."

Why, the Shadow does - the Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men (and ladies.) And apparently, the sheik does, too. I suppose he consulted with his own heart.

Regards,
John

Well, as USA has good heart, also the Magic Kingdom has good heart as well (using your terminology! Laughing), and the Sheikh represents/reflects this good heart!

Dear NCTBA,

You don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing.

While I agree that disfreedom of speech triumphed in this case (and that is a 'good' thing for SA in this case), it must be pointed out that what he said was self-contradictory:

Quote:
Al-Shethri said mixing of sexes in the land of the Two Holy Mosques was unacceptable.

As shrewdly pointed out by a columnist:

Quote:
If the sheikh views it immoral then we have to shut down [...] the Two Holy Mosques,

(and hospitals and shopping malls as well)

they would have two separate flights to single destinations: one for men and another with shaded windows for women. Such suggestions are unreasonable

Actually, in the Saudi context they're not that far out of line. After all, schools, government offices - even banks - are gender segregated here, though you'd never guess that from reading this rather self congratulatory article. Even the genuine hard liners have to accept that, from a financial and logistic point of view, it's simply impossible to have segregated airplanes. However, if it were at all possible, quite a few people in KSA would be in favour. Same goes for hospitals.

Read it!

That has to rank up there with some of the most bizarre little essays I've read. I went into writing teacher mode immediately... talk about free range supports. I kept being stopped in mid paragraph to wonder about his point. Malaysia vs Afghanistan? Huh? Weekend marriages? Getting acid on one's thobe?

Thanks for the laugh, trap...

I have to wonder - in what universe was THIS true about Afghanistan:

"About half a century ago, Malaysia was a backward, poor and disunited country while Afghanistan was a civilized, rich and united nation."

John

Well, it was, at least, one of the United Nations.

Dear InterRick,
As is North Korea today. But I really don't think that half a century ago, Afghanistan could be described as being "civilized, rich and united." Back then, as today, it was/is feudal, tribal, clannish, and dirt-poor (well, except for the drug money, that is.)
Regards,
John
