...or riding a bicycle! I don't drive so my bike's more important to me. Still, from what I've heard about driving standards on the road I'm not sure I'd want to cycle there anyway! (Always look on the bright side, eh?!) |

is abysmal and I definitely wouldn't want to drive even if I could. Some of our male colleagues have been chased (at high speed) and threatened.
Actually women are not allowed to cycle in Saudi although it is permitted in the DQ and quite safe there too.

| I can live without cycling for a year. Acually, I felt better about not being able to cycle when I heard about the standards of driving. (A sort of positive sour grapes kind of attitude!) Though it's possible to cycle in the DQ, I don't think I'd be pushing a bike there to have a ride! |

In most of Gulf, bike riding requires that you have a strong death wish.

Dear veiledsentiments,
"In most of Gulf, bike riding requires that you have a strong death wish."
Not a problem, really, since going to live/work in the Middle East usually has the same requirement.
Regards,
John |

Not sure if I'd agree with that one... most of the Gulf is like quiet, safe, slightly boring suburbia. I've never felt safer anywhere in the world.

Dear veiledsentiments,
Ah, but that's usually NOT the preconception most people going there for the first timer have (thanks to the media.) |

If you want your body to stay in its original shape, never ever ride a bicycle in the streets of the Magic Kingdom!
Do you know that riding a camel in the Magic Kingdom is beneficial and 200% safer than riding a bike? At least, in a road accident, there is a high probability that the car (e.g GMC or Toyota) will be damaged by the body of the camel, you will be in the safe side, and you get a minimum of SR5000 in case the camel die (this is the Magic Kingdom rules for hitting a camel in a road)!
So, watch out that camel crossing the road in Riyadh!!! |

Not to mention that with the size of a camel (similar to Moose in the US) the probability of it coming through the windshield and killing the people in the front seat is very very high. It happens all the time.
People in the US didn't believe me that the only danger in the Gulf was traffic accidents. (which wasn't that much worse than Washington DC to be honest)

|
|
To quote me:
| Quote: |
| Had an interview with Bell and was surprised to find that they couldn't answer any questions about the job. I thought an interview was supposed to be a two-way process! |
Well, they offered me the job so it looks like I'll be coming to KSU after all. Rather odd application procedure; they only tell you what the job involves AFTER they offer you the job! Anyone already there from KSU, let me know how things are going on the women's side (although I think I've got the general idea already!) Any advise/info for me will be gratefully received.
Where is the woman's apartment anyway? I know the women are still in a hotel at the moment but Bell tells me the apartments should be ready soon(!) I want to know what'll be on my doorstep before I get there! If I don't get any answers here I'll start PM-ing people but I only know of one person who is definitely at KSU. You know who you are!
More specifically and on a more cheerful note, are the shisha cafes for women too? Can I go there by myself and/or with other women for a smoke? I hope the answer is yes because it's almost as good as having a beer! (Although both together is pretty nice too!) I gather I can't go anywhere with a man unless we have a married couple with us... I need to make some married couple friends... Afterthought; do the male and female KSU teachers even know each other? Afterafterthought; is that why they let the female teachers out half an hour before the men?! |

| Any male candidates in the US awaiting a visa from Bell? How long have you been waiting? Please PM me or respond directly to the board. Thanks! |
