i would love to visit the ukraine (and romania), but only for a month or two. i would like to volunteer to teach english instead of being a full-time tourist; i think it would be a more enjoyable experience if i interact with the people. i know this is a site dedicated to teaching (and getting paid) english, but can anyone offer any information regarding volunteering? could i simply go to a school and tell them i'm willing to volunteer for a month?

we could find a public school if you can send a PM with the dates you expect to come. I have an English teacher I know who does some volunteer work in a public school do I can ask her if she could help arrange a few weeks of volunteer work. I would think a school for adults would hesitate to put you in since you would be leaving shortly. Students expect more continuity. Summertime would probably be more of a challenge though.

Pryvit! Greetings! If you are looking for a volunteer experience, one which will be tiring but physically, culturally and spiritually stimulating, then I would highly recommend that you check out the Ukrainian Catholic University's English Summer School program. For about a month, you will be tucked away in the Carpathian mountain foothills, helping both seminary and lay students of the university to improve their English and get to know American, Canadian and European people. It is also a time of reflection and spiritual growth, as academics and faith intertwine in an unforgettable experience, starting the first week of July. One does not need to be Catholic or even Christian to participate; in fact the inclusion of other faiths helps add to their learning experience--still not even one full generation removed from the evils of Communism. Learn about Ukraine, about its people, how they have suffered for so many centuries under various occupiers, how Russia tried to eliminate the Ukrainian population through forced starvation (and how they outlawed an entire Church during Communism!). Come and learn, and then take that experience back home and share with others. You will not look at Ukraine, or even life, the same way again. I have done it twice. It has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

On a logistical level, they pay nothing, but once you are in-country, they take care of you and provide housing and meals while with them. Try this link, and find out more information. If you don't want to teach, you can also try their Ukrainian (language) Summer School. You won't be disappointed. Here is the link:

Take care, good luck, and God bless!
