It happened to me, too. It IS typical. The Saudis in administration don't care. Full stop.

I've known several people who have had to leave for family emergencies. I have never known any of them to have had a problem, in any of the several places I've worked in. I'm not saying it can't happen - your and Mia's posts obviously confirm that it can - but it's nonsense to use such phrases as 'full stop' when you are only speaking for your own experience.

When would you, one of the most adamant apologists for the Tragic Kingdom on this forum, ever consider it typical?

When there aren't large numbers of people with exactly the opposite experience.

Like Didah, I had a similar situation several years ago. I was working in the Dingdong of Saudi Arabia when I learned that my mom had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was set to go back to be with her, but my wife (ex- now, thank God) insisted that I continue working there so the life I "owed" her would not be interrupted.

Well, I think your ex-wife is worse than some of the Saudi administrators!

I think a real man when faced with such a terrible tragedy, and if his employer refuses to help/understand his tragedy, then he should put his resignation and save his face if he has one!. Full stop.

Again, I forgot to qualify my statement. I experienced no compassion with personal emergencies in Saudi Arabia, and quite a few of my colleagues experience the same lack of compassion...but this was indeed at one university and I cannot speak for them all.

No one could do that, but let me be clear that it happened to me twice--I fought and won the first one; I fought and lost the second one.

These occurred on contracts at different employers, neither of which was your university.

As usual, it all depends on your employer. If you're lucky/smart enough to have a good one, there's compassion and speed.
The IPA in my time there was such an employer.

Regards,
John

Firstly, many thanks for your kind words for my mother, in public and private.

Secondly, a strange twist has occurred in this story (and this one you COULD NOT make up, I promise you!!). I was ready to sack things in Saudi, tell my employer that I cannot come back, let my iqama expire, go back to sell/chuck/collect my stuff once the dust settles...

However, this morning, I got a call from a recruitment agent about an interview for a teaching job here in the UK. She asked me to bring some documents (the usual stuff - degree etc). I said that some of my documents may still be in Saudi Arabia.

She then said that an OFFICIAL OVERSEAS POLICE CHECK is ESSENTIAL to account for any time over 3 months spent abroad! Otherwise, you cannot get a teaching job in the UK - private or state sector!

The check should say that there are no outstanding convictions against you etc. Doing a bit more research online, if it's from a foreign country, you'll need it translated and attested perhaps by the British Consulate in Saudi Arabia.

All this was news to me (any of you guys familiar with this?)! If you plan on teaching in a western country after time spent abroad, make sure you try to obtain one such document!! Who knows, you might even need it for other Gulf countries...?!?

Now, I'm sure you all know that if you are not in the country and your iqama runs out, you are officially an absconder, there'll be outstanding bills in your name etc. I would be extremely surprised if a clean police check comes back!

I'll phone the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the General Teaching Council (GTC) tomorrow to find out if there are any procedures in place for those who cannot obtain overseas police checks due to exceptional circumstances. I'll keep y'all posted...

Well, I got a teaching job with a university here in UK, and was absent more than 10 years from UK and my employer knew about it and did not ask me to provide a foreign police check. They carried out their own check and got the CRB for me. I know that only the home office ask for foreign police check for people who want to settle in UK.

As far as I know, the Magic Kingdom does not provide a police certificate if you are not resident and present in the Magic Kingdom. You need to explain that you are not anymore resident in the Magic Kingdom, and it is impossible to get the police certificate from the Magic Kingdom.
