| "Dessert Nose" raised ALARM and CAUTION about management at UAEU, but provided no information or details. When pressed for details, "Desert Nose" practically vanishes and remains unresponsive.....VERY SUSPICIOUS INDEED!! Somehow the discussion turns to some FOUNDATION PROGRAM. Am I missing something here? |

Actually you wouldn't have missed anything if you had never read any of this thread. You've been here awhile so you should be familiar with how it often goes around here...

Who says Desert Nose doesn't work in the foundation program? In any case, foundation or other program, management problems tend to be the same and the thread is called working at UAEU

Having experienced a very bad director at UAEU I wanted to provide information to anyone who might think of applying for the position that has just been posted again.
However, I find the tone of this forum to be 'bullying' and wonder if I can really be of help to the unwitting soul who takes the position in that department.
I expect some harsh remarks from the group that seems to be controlling this forum.
Genuine requests for information regarding a newly-posted position at UAEU will be respectfully answered. Thank you. |

You are right about the bullying tone used by many posters on this board. However, don't let them affect you. You should see some of the other boards...
What department is this position in exactly?

You seem to be experienced with UGRU. I am.
I was a member of the first incoming group of teachers back in 1990. I spent five years teaching for the unit -- half on the male campus and half on the female. Working with these students was a tremendous pleasure. It is safe to say they were the best I have ever been associated with.
UGRU about to fold? Trust me -- the same was said when we first arrived. Whenever one feels worried about the UGRU workings, my suggestion for you is to sit back, sip a hot cup of tea and chuckle. When working for UGRU, never lose your ability to chuckle. If anything can be planned, evaluated, implemented, replanned, and then replanned again to the point of ad nausea, well that thing was (maybe is) alive and well in UGRU.
My only problem with the non-teaching side of UGRU was the emiratee in charge of housing. To make a long story short, requesting to live by myself, the individual put me in a very nice one bedroom apartment, but right over a sewing shop. Whenever the machines were placed right up against a wall, it sounded like a jackhammer. I spent two years there before I was allowed to move.
The first boss we had was a perfect match for the math/computer literacy unit. He was there for three years. It was a pleasure to work for him. Why he was let go, I do not know unless there were bad vibes between him and his boss.
To give you some idea as to the lack of backbone operating in the unit at the time, this individual was notified of his firing via an advertisement in the Chronicle of Higher Education for his position. It was brought to his attention by one of the teachers. To me and others in the unit ... well we have an expression for it in Texas.
After he was let go, UGRU then called in some retiree who should have stayed retired. There was only one other person with a doctorate in the unit. He had been put in charge of some facet of test design. Well, the new guy on the block boss, called the test design individual in and started screaming at him about his efforts. Well, the old guy on the block loss his temper -- bye, bye. Now, the new guy on the block had no threats via other doctorates on staff.
I might add, he pulled the same screaming routine on me once, but I didn't lose it. I worked two years under him and left, but with a giant black mark by my name. I have been unable to land a job in the middle east ever since.
I will never forget the beauty of the country and the kindness of its citizenry. I will never forget my students. That's why I stayed five years. |
