Ask to see what these fees are and post them here, I could use a good laugh. |

Can anyone confirm what a CoE for employment costs?
What I've seen so far is that the return postage stamp for it is about 700 yen, and a copy of the document is 1000 yen. The remainder of the "expenses" is the labour required by the company to register the application.
I found this information here
http://o-bic.net/e/setup/cost/early.html |
#1, COE is usually the abbreviation for Certificate of Eligibility, not employment.
#2, I looked at that site, and they actually talk about a certificate of employment, something I have never heard of in over a decade of living here and helping people with advice about visas.
#3, if it's something as cheap at 1000 yen, and this is the item they want money back on, GEOS must really be hurting to ask a resigning teacher to pay it back. I seriously doubt they want this trivial amount of money.
#4, the real COE (eligibility) costs the employer nothing. It is issued by immigration, and the employer has to supply only a contract (or at least a description of hours and pay) and tax records to prove they are legit. Again, if GEOS is asking for money to reimburse them for this, they are absolutely crazy.
#5, that link looks more like what is needed procedurally and financially to set up one's own company here. Non sequitur.
Look, don't ask GEOS what they mean, despite our immense curiosity. Just get used to the job and enjoy the experience. Asking about this stuff so early is bound to give you suspicious looks from the start. |

What's everyone looking at?
No matter how many times I read the table, I see under section 5: Resident status, the first thing listed is "Application for Certificate of Eligibility" and across the board for all company types it says "Free of charge".
Even if the site is for setting up companies, it still confirms that the COE costs nothing. |

| As others have commented, the CoE costs nothing. I didn't pay anything for my visa (I got it in the US in 2006). |

| Make sure you keep a firm eye on the situation with GEOS. They have closed a lot of branches this year, staff have apparently had their pay delayed at one point, and people are starting to talk about another Nova. It might pay to think about what you might do if they suddenly closed/didn't pay you on time. |

| To the OP, I really wouldn't worry about the visa fees thing. Chances are they can't enforce it and even if they try to it won't be much. And in any case everyone I know who has worked for GEOS has enjoyed it and has stayed their contract or even renewed. |

Heres another questions. I Just recieved my COE and now just have to get it to japanese embassy here in US. I was wondering after the Visa comes through and since this is for GEOS, even if they go under or something is this Visa still good for me to use thus making it a tad easier for finding another job?
thanks |

| The visa is good until it expires. You can get fired or laid off, or you can resign. It is still valid. NOVA people kept theirs, remember? |
