I've been reading about this on Let's Japan, and it backs up your advice Ryu:

Quote:
From my NOVA experience, which practically made me a pera legal, I suggest that GEOS employees get aquainted with their loca labor office, and find out what their rights are, and don't quit yet; if you quit now, you'll have to wait three months before you can collect unemployment. If GEOS goes belly up, you can get it much more quickly. Just keep calling in sick if they don't pay you.

I worked at Nova when it went bankrupt, so I feel my experiences and advice is probably more relevant than anyone else's here.

For one thing, don't quit your job yet. That is horrible advice. Feel free to spend a lot of time looking for other jobs and having people look over your resume. It doesn't take that long to look for jobs, so I question the wisdom of people who tell you to call in sick and look for other jobs instead.

In Japan, there is a form of wage insurance that basically covers 80% of your unpaid wages if your company goes bankrupt. It takes about 6 months to get the money. Some people think I was a sucker for going into work until the very end at Nova, but I got paid 80% of what I was owed (actually, because of what happened, I got paid more than I would have for the time I had actually worked). Compare that to the people who suggest staying home and surfing the internet and their zero (actually, it hurt them with unemployment insurance too). If you're owed less than 20,000 yen you get nothing.

For anyone at Geos, get your unemployment insurance card (雇用保険被保険者証 - koyohokenhihokenshashou - http://www.hyougo-roudoukyoku.go.jp/seido/koyou_hoken/koyou_tetuduki.htm - has an example). If you don't have it, call personnel / payroll until they give you your number. Quitting now automatically makes you wait 3 months before you can claim unemployment. If the company goes bankrupt or you aren't paid on time twice, you can go and claim unemployment after waiting a week. Unemployment is calculated based on your last 6 months of earnings, so if you call in sick to sit around at home, your earnings, and therefore unemployment, decrease.

Inflames - do you need to have paid into one of the health/pension schemes or already be registered for resident tax (been a resident on Jan 1st) to get that unemployment insurance, or is it something that is mandatory for all employees that all companies take care of?

Shiori

In general, you have to work for more than 20 hours a week and have an employment term of more than 6 months (that's actually a requirement for claiming unemployment insurance) to be enrolled in unemployment. If you're enrolled in shakai hoken, you're automatically enrolled in koyou hoken.

Pay slips arrived today stating Oct 30th as pay day. Also this year's Year-end tax adjustment form.

Head office email still not working (3 days now).

Nerima school is being closed (no date though).

Fryer (heh heh),

I'm with you on this one. Let's start to keep our eye on things so we can mark the exact moment when we say "A ha!"

Let's see how it all turns out. Hopefully it is all a false alarm and GEOS turns out all right

Regards,

well, with the NOVA situation fresh in everyones minds; hopefully they will make the right (hard) decisions at the necessary time and not fall into the Nova mistakes (although their situations are quite different)

.... stay tuned

I'd have to say that although the situations are different, it's because of what happened to Nova that GEOS is going to find things even more difficult. At the slightest hint of anything going wrong (and what we've heard already is more than just a hint), speculation is rife; this means students have started not to renew, and teachers have started looking for new jobs. If there wasn't a major threat to the company's financial health to begin with, there is now. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Speculation that GEOS is going under has been posted for at least the past 5 years, in my recollection. Yes, the NOVA debacle will enhance it, but it's not like the GEOS problems are new.

True perhaps, but how much longer could a company like GEOS deal with its problems and stay still afloat?

Was everyone paid today? I am so curious to see what is happening.

The advise about calling in sick re: UE is brilliant. Something I did not know about Japanese Labor Law. Great advise, and keep looking for work too on those days off!
