No one has it all...

Highest starting salaries? ADVETI and ECAE.

Best accommodation situation: Depends on the emirate. HCT has a nice inventory of accommodation in most emirates. ECAE gives a whopping amount of cash to find your own place. AUS houses on campus (blah). UAEU-hard to tell what the situation is currently. I heard a lot of complaints about the provided accommodation in the past year. Is this resolved?

Most professional treatment: AUS and possibly ZU(though there are mixed reviews on that)

Not all the institutions of higher ed provide good opportunties for one to develop in the field. New institutions tend to provide more opportunities for professional development simply because there's a need for things like course development. Naturally, new institutions have their hiccups. You want procedures in place? Then going w/ established organisations like HCT, UAEU, ZU, etc.

ADVETI? That's a new one for me mish...

I had to laugh at your "blah" comment about on-campus living. I must point out that it is very nice furnished housing and there are advantages in having no commute - especially in Sharjah. And it is great for the newbies to the Gulf who manage to get in to AUS (who tend to be professors). It certainly takes away the pressure of finding a flat and/or furnishing it in a new country when it is 40C outside and you don't have a car yet. But, having lived in an on-campus situation in Oman for 4 years, there is a definite lack of privacy. Laughing

Dear veiedsentiments,

ADVETI is on facebook:

"TAFE NSW, through the IBO, has been successful in winning an international tender to establish the first institute of vocational education and training in Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute (ADVETI) will be fully funded by the Abu Dhabi Government (through the Abu Dhabi Education Council) and will be opening in early September 2007. The Institute will offer programmes and qualifications in a range of vocational areas and prospective students will gain access to intensive English teaching and support, particularly in the first semester of their course"

Last year seems to have not been a good one:

"Daniel Bardsley
Last Updated: September 14. 2008 12:12AM UAE / September 13. 2008 8:12PM GMT
ABU DHABI // Student enrolment at a vocational training centre has fallen by half after the expansion of federal university places, the institutes director has said.

About 300 new students are expected to take up places at Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute (Adveti) in the coming weeks, half the number who joined when the centre opened in 2007.

The dip follows the Governments decision to allow all qualified young people to enrol in a federal universities, including UAE University, Zayed University and the Higher Colleges of Technology, and increasing their funding, which allowed admissions to grow from 10,785 last year to 13,315 this year.

In previous years, thousands of Emiratis were unable to attend federal universities because of insufficient funds."

Here's the intro page:

What is ADVETI? Its new. Its different. Its exciting.

and I think this is the website:

I don't recall that we have had any of their teachers pass through here as yet to give us the real lowdown. I couldn't find any employment information on the website... lots of "under construction" stuff - and the facebook page isn't much better. It appears that they only recruited in Oz.

I know of recent ADVETI contracts (vocational school, basically). 32,000/month plus quite decent flats in town. The airfare and all allowances are included in that 32,000. The downside: They're working quite hard. Split shifts, I believe. Lots of great PD opportunities? Nah....but that's a hefty sum of money in your pocket each month.

I was told that airfare, kids' schooling and not sure what else are not given on top of that lovely, inflated basic salary. So, it's a great deal for singles, but not necessarily for those with a family.

And also, aren't some still stuck in hotels/hotel apartments? (I realise this actually suits some.)

That's right. As I mentioned above, airfare is included in that 32,000. Not at all ideal for people w/ kids, as you pointed out. The people i know are in nice 2bdr units on island.
